Asking for help with T400 CPU transplant

#1 Post by RRHODY » Mon May 14, 2012 6:03 pm

About to do a CPU transplant on one of my T400's. Besides being careful, are there other tips or tricks I should know? I've some experience with the insides of laptops, but no previous work with thermal paste or CPU removal in a laptop [done it with desktops only].
Thanks for any help.

No tricks. As long as you are careful, it isn't hard. The fan is easier to mount on a laptop. When you screw the 4 9.5mm screws that hold the fan, tighten in a "X" pattern. As far as thermal grease, lhere are lots of tutorials available on youtube. The important thing is "less is more". In other words, don't use too much.

Here is the manual:

Thanks, I already have the manual. It looks like the fan removal/replacement is the tricky part.
Is there already thermal paste to remove?

I have done more than a couple of cpu transfers on old generation thinkpads.
Remove with a soft tissue paper the old paste first. Then apply just a small blob of
new thermal paste on the chip centre. When you mount the fan and put on the nuts
the thermal will spread when the cpu heats up and thats it.Don't lift the fan again to
check that the paste has really spread.!
