T410 display enhancement

Howdy all,

Ive seen quite a few threads talking about the lackluster display of the T410, and I have to say it is a bit of a change from the SL line I enjoyed previously (Flexview). One thing I have found that has helped tremendously is to open the Intel graphics control panel, and modify the Display -> Color Enhancement properties. I have copied my current settings below - they may be a bit much for you, but I have found they make a night-and-day difference on my machine. Hope you find them useful as well!

Brightness: -13
Contrast: 51
Gamma: 0.9
Hue: 6
Saturation: (9-13 seems to be a sweet spot)

Note: Saturation is the really important one - it's what makes colors 'pop'. Problem is that too much makes things look... cartoony? and degraded. Most of the other setting adjustments are to compensate for this effect. The perfect balance, though, really makes a difference :-)

I was fine with the default settings, but when I saw this post I thought, might as well give it a try.

Well, I'm glad I did. It made a huge difference, I didn't even realize how much nicer the display could look. After switching back and forth a bit, the difference really is night and day, the default settings look so muted and muddy.

If you've been happy with your T410 but haven't messed with the display settings I recommend giving this a try. It's quick and it really helped in my case. Thanks a lot for the post, JHawkins. 8)

Well, gotta say, this makes older Thinkpads look better too. Running a T61 here, with Nvidia graphics. I played with the settings a bit, turning up contrast, turning up the gamma a bit, and turned up "digital vibriance" (presumably saturation) a lot. It makes things look MUCH better! Comparing to my dell 2007WFP IPS panel, the looks are much nicer than they were before adjustment. On the Dell panel, skin tones would look like...skin tones, while on the TP display, they'd be a pallid grey-ish color. Changing these settings really DOES help a lot!

Maybe I really can live with Thinkpad displays...

I got a piece of freeware called Calibrize--very simple monitor calibration and it works very well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Flexviews were available in the SL series.

You are indeed correct! I stand... well, corrected :-)

My old SL410 had Vibrantvew - not Flexview - it seems.

Bringing this one back up because the specs in the first post helped with my screen and wanted to say thanks.

I have to say, these settings made quite a difference for watching movies, which were pretty awful on the default settings (dark & muddy).

This display enhancement is quite good for T410 common user...It was just like the color is getting alive, especially when you open an application/program in white color background...

For those with nVidia based GPU solutions: (December 2010 Update)
Color Channel
Red
Brightness +37%
Contrast +52%
Gamma 0.85

Green
Brightness +37%
Contrast +47%
Gamma 0.87

Blue
Brightness +30%
Contrast +35%
Gamma 0.83

Saturation/Digital vibrance: 53% (From 50% default)

These are my personal settings however, they might look weird for you on your panel.

Very nice adjustment. Just got my T410 and was reading the notebookreview forums T410 Owner's Lounge thread and found this page :) Did the tweaks and it does seem to help. Now let's see what it does to my battery :)

Colour calibrating your display should have absolutely no impact on your battery life at all.

Hi,

I have a T410 with Nvidia GPU - but where do I setup the Color Channels? It's not the Intel Setup like said in the posts above, isn't it?

The biggest difference is the increase of color saturation, which naturally makes it look more vibrant, like the glossy displays. No mystery here. :)

I used an eye one display 2 monitor calibrator to create a custom monitor profile on my T410s and what a difference it made! The whites are white and the blacks are black and colors are really true to life. As a photographer and Photoshop user this is important to me. I have calibrated several monitors but I think the T410s screen showed the most pronounced improvement of them all.

I agree, I can't find these in the "NVIDIA Control Panel" either.

Confirmed for a more "wow" display experience on a T420 with 1600X900 B140RW02 V1 Display Panel and Optimus graphics. I let the Intel display calibration override the NVidia settings in the control panel as it found the Intel tuning to be more pleasing to the eye than the NVidia.

YEs, I am bringing this thread back from the dead!!!

Arg!! Grr!!

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks for the calibration tweaks. My T410 has the NVidia GPU and looks much better when using the RGB changes posted above. Hopefully by making deals with pagan God's and reviving this thread, other people can make use of it.

I've tried it on my T410s and I thought the colors were a little bit over-saturated. I like with with hue at 0, slightly higher brightness, and lower saturation though.
