T410 and 1x8gb RAM stick

Hello all,

I've been reading the W series threads and yesterday it was mentioned that the Crucial 1x8gb stick is "down" to $379 which got me wondering - can I install one of these in my T410? I know Lenovo says the max is 2x4gb = 8gb, however, they said the same type of thing about my R40 back in the day and I was able to install 2x the ram. Then it was explained that they listed the max based on what was "reasonably affordable" when it was new.

Now $379 may still not be reasonably affordable, but for $200 at Christmas (if I'm lucky) I might bite. So the question is - does anyone *know* if a 1x8gb stick will work in a T410? Thanks!

yip..... see sign it works on W Series , plus I have a T410s that has the SAME 8GB sticks - runns NICELY
when I got mine they are near DOUBLE THAT PRICE !!

FYI - I have tested my W Series machine(s) with the "204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) "- -they dont give any added speed and are not any 'faster' than the normal 1333 ones

If you dont want to spend THAT EXTRA money ... Thinkpad with these RAM CHIPS(1333) and + intel SSD ...boots up super fast (i dont beleive in lenovo's "RAPID boot" !!
,,,, for me its(rapidboot) not as usefull- as it creats some smoke&mirros effect with FAST ACCESS based on some 'stats' etc etc ,,,and it messes up with out coperate wide virus apps ,,,, so sys admin dont like it also)

edits - added extra comments

Great, thanks ausmike! Good to know you've tested it in the t410s, so now I just need to keep an eye on the price. :)

Havnt used THAT one but have used lots of Corsair - they are very reliable
and used to be 'default' IBM supplier for laptop memory at once time

NewEgg rocks - most reliable and excellent quality merchant from my experiances ( been a customer since they started)

cheers

What benefits does a single 8GB stick provide? I spent $65 on 8GB of RAM and have more memory than I could ever need. Besides, our boards cap out at an 8GB maximum, and even if we jammed 16GB in there...is it not a severe overkill? For $250+ I'd be looking into a SSD first.

They support more than 8GB.

A single 8GB stick doesn't really provide anything over 2x4GB except only having to power one RAM module.

Glad your use cases are satisfied by 8gb of RAM but that doesn't mean everyone else's are. The board can take 2x8gb and when I can get 16gb for a reasonable price I will - and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I already have an SSD and a large mechanical disk in the ultrabay.

If you don't mind me asking - what was the voltage of the RAM you tried in the T410s (e.g., 1.5v or 1.35v)? If it was 1.5v do you know if it was 2 sided double rank RAM or no? Thanks!

currently all 8GB SODIMMs on the market are 2R 1.5V.

you'll find all the currently validated 1333 and 1600MHz SODIMMs here, including 8GB: http://download.intel.com/technology/me ... WW42_5.pdf

ausmike:

can you confirm that the single 8GB stick worked in your T410s?
what brand and model of memory was it?

that would be very helpful letting us (me) know.

thanks

Hi Tom;

Sorry for delay in reply(s)

T410s that I have had = the EARLY production model - ((as I work for a company that is on ALPHA/BETA testing etc ,, 0 we usually lucky enough to test most NEW MODELS BEFORE anyone in Public even see it!!))

Both memory tested (from memory - as it was nearly 18mths ago)one from SamSung' other was from Hynix - these there the same TWO 8GB sets shown in the Intel Link from previous user(above)

There are number of 8GB sticks avalible @ NEWEGG - my fav store and if they dont work - you can EASILY return/exchange them for another brand
. NOPE I dont get any freebbee's for doing this !

laptop memory vs SPEED /Performace etc... is always a TRADE OFF between "memory speed" ; Hard Drive ; Internal Buss Speeds ; proc'sor etc etc ,,,,, < am not techie either!>
but at our work we run lots and lots of "vm" and ONLY on WINDOWS7x64 - but most of our Lenovo laptops = Unix/linux platforms!

Hope this helps!
