Confusion about FX3800M for W701/W701ds

#1 Post by snovvman » Thu Mar 26, 2015 9:30 am

Greetings,

According to this:
http://ridingtheflow.blogspot.com/2011/ ... nd-of.html

The FX3800M built for the HP8740W is different than the one for the Thinkpad. However, when I search for a FX3800M for W701x, I see them listed as applicable for both the HP and Lenovo. Even when I search for the Lenovo part number 63Y2058, I come upon listings as showing that they will work for both the HP and Lenovo.

Can anyone shed some light? I just don't want to brick my display panel.

Another question: Will a 940XM work in the W701x?

Thanks!

For the first question I can't really answer. But what I'd suggest is that if you are buying from those sellers listing both lenovo and HP, include a msg of something like "63Y2058 for lenovo W701(ds)" and check for FRU or things with 'lenovo' on it when it arrives.

I'd suggest not to try it without being sure it's from W701 cos one of my friends bricked his when he tried Quadro 5000m

As for the second question: yes, W701 can take an i7 940xm, but there's not much difference between an i7 940xm and i7 920xm cos you can overclock both using throttlestop on W701

Thanks! I actually have an Quadro 5000M--I'm glad I didn't try it.

I happen to have a 940XM, but I also have a 840QM. I've read that even between those two, it's not a huge difference. True?

No, there's a huge difference. You can overclock an i7 940xm and push it to about 2.8Ghz on all four cores on W701, performance is then about the same as an i7 2820qm. But there's no way you can overclock i7 840qm, at least not on W701.

You can probably overclock an i7 940xm further if cooling is enough. There are 3.5Ghz (all four cores) i7 920xm/940xm on alienware M15x.

Without overclocking, the difference is just like the difference between 0.50 and 0.55, both a far cry from the new i7 quad cores, which is some 0.9-1.3
