Re: W500 X9100 Overheating
Since there is no "W500" heatsinks, the heatsink shares with both T500 and W500 and is already made for 35W CPU usually. What you are basically holding is a T500 chassis with single difference is GPU for W500.
What you need is to take heatsink fan off for a dust cleaning inside and lift the fan rotor and oil little in the bronze bearing sleeve with true oil using eye of a small needle as dropper, (engine oil will do if you only have it or baby oil, not WD40 or silicone oil. (this has bent over tabs, just undo little of these tabs and cut foil tape to separate, use Kapton tape to reseal and bend tabs back down.)
And buy kryonaut by thermal Grizzly for thermal compound, polish the heatsink contact spots with wet and dry 600 grit sandpaper to knock off high spots.
Should know that x9100 is a 44W CPU.
Cheers, thinkpadcollection

Re: W500 X9100 Overheating
Could I suggest using ThrottleStop to under-volt the X9100? It curbs the heat production on the X9100, depending on how low your X9100 can go with voltage.
Here is a screenshot of it running on my R61i, don't mind the slower front-side bus it operates on. Also, if you do not know how to use it, I suggest to avoid playing with the Clock Modulation, Chipset Clock Modulation, and the UNLK buttons.
To under-volt the X9100 with ThrottleStop: all you have to do is click the left arrow button on the right side of where the Voltage ID label sits at. The right arrow button raises the voltage, which is something you might need to do if the X9100 is not stable at a lower voltage. I suggest a voltage ID value of 1.1750 or 1.1875, but be aware that all X9100 processors are not always capable of working with lower voltage values. Which means, you might have to increase your voltage ID value to 1.1875 if it is not stable on 1.1750. Signs of not being stable can include your W500 freezing out of nowhere, so be careful with the voltage ID settings.
One question though, did you use TPFanControl to force your W500's fan to run at its maximum speed?
Avoid the C0 stepping X9100 (SLB48), that is if you are not looking at overclocking. The better option would be a T9900 (SLGEE) that is always found in an E0 stepping revision, since the E0 stepping Penryn processors tend to run cooler than their C0 stepping counterparts. Well, if you don't mind the ridiculous cost of the T9900.
Or if you are very lucky, you can get the extremely rare E0 stepping X9100 (SLGE7) for the best of both worlds. Mainly for being a T9900 with an unlocked multiplier.

Re: W500 X9100 Overheating
I've fiddled with ThrottleStop on the W500 until I found the sweet spot for temperatures and performance.
Before doing any kind of modification, uncheck BD PROCHOT. I had issues with it not being able to stay at 3.06GHz all the time.
You can set it to 1.15v, but you might experience some stutters here and there. 1.175v seems to be fine. If you really want to overclock it, my CPU (C0 revision) can go to 3.3GHz @ 1.2375v -1.25v, but be prepared to reset it as fast as possible if you experience massive temperatures. Anything higher will cause a BSOD.
If you're looking for saving battery, lowering the frequency to 1.6GHz and the voltage to 1.0v (lower is not possbile by ThrottleStop).
I recommend you use TPFanControl set to 64 all the time, or get a CPU cooler that sits next to the heatsink. Temperatures are in the range of 60-70°C.
