Integrated mode VS Optimus : Same GPU used but FPS cap?
Integrated mode VS Optimus : Same GPU used but FPS cap?
Hello, i noticed while testing a W520 that when running on integrated graphics only mode, i get 160fps in source games and when i run optimus (i checked and launching source games turn on nvidia gpu) i get only 60fps on the same game, and same power plan.. There's FPS cap somewhere but i can't find the setting.. Anyone know about this? Thanks in advance.

That's probably because of Vertical Sync settings. It is always on.
It reduces the FPS to display's refresh rate which is 60 hz.
Disable Vertical Sync and you'll solve the problem.

I thought so first but it's not! Wouldn't have made up this thread if it was..

That's weird.
Is this on AC or battery power?
Did you doublecheck app specific Vsync settings in NVIDIA Control Panel?

No, this is not Vsync.. Otherwise i wouldn't go past 60FPS, and that happens (looking at the sky/ground for example). Once again, in the same situation with discrete graphics mode, i'd get +180FPS..!

nVidia has had this for ages, it caps the framerate to the refreshrate for energy saving.
It's a no-cost gain anyway. I wouldn't worry about it.
If you want to play it to the max, buy a 22" CRT for like $10 and play at 1024x768 @ 170 Hz
