W700 and Verizon Wireless

#1 Post by FryPpy » Sun Dec 07, 2014 8:57 am

Recently i've got W700 from ebay. I don't dreamed about Ancient Behemoth but it have listed as $130 and i have taken it. It is 2752-W1G - nothing exceptional but now it is mine;)
As a first upgrade i've got palmrest with xrite and wacom. I don't know is it from W700 or W701 but it fits well. I haven't found any stickers with FRU numbers - only winstron numbers and mfg date around spring 2009. Stilus fixator i have taken from old X201 tablet body and it fits and works well too.

But the question is:
On palmrest with xrite and wacom there was 2 stickers - Windows 7 (it's Ok) and "Verizon Wireless broadband access builtin".
I've read tabooks and HMMs and didn't find any mention about WWAN antennas and WWAN modules in W70x series.
What it means?
- this sticker not from W70x series and have accidently glued when palmrest was stored in warehouse?
- this sticker mention that thinkpad that have that palmrest have WUSB??
- there was custom W70x models (more probably W701 because it have 3nd miniPCIe slot) with WWAN options. But it is so rare that no info about it in HMMs (like X61 with T9300 CPU)???

Is there a WWAN slot in the machine? That would be my first question.

I'd presume that by this generation WWAN was not placed in the mini PCI-e slot, although I've never owned a W70* system so I may very well be wrong.

I haven't found any stickers with FRU numbers ON THE PALMREST. Palmrest with "Verizon Wireless" sticker have been bought alone because my W700 2752-W1G haven't wacom scratchpad;). BIOS told me that it is definitely 2752-W1G;)
I don't know is this palmrest with "Verizon Wireless" was taken from W700 or W701.

In W700 there are 2 miniPCIe slots - one for WWAN and on for halfheight WUSB (may be for turbo memory too?). There are 4 antennas going from the screen 3 for WWAN and 1 for WUSB.
Of Course i meant WLAN (WiFi) here ^ sorry.

W700 is a big brother of 500/400 series while W701 - 410/510. All of them (400,500,410,510) have fullsize miniPCIe WWAN slot.

Is there a SIM card slot? There's a reason for this question.

I've never owned any of the W70* systems, and frankly it shows. Thanks... :thumbs-UP:

I have made small mistake in previous post:( And corrected it.
I don't see an SIM card slots, and HMM don't show this part for 70x. And i didn't stripped it to mainboard. May be it have connector for SIM reader.

Anyway let's wait sometime - may be someone who have owned such thinkpad come to this topic.

BTW. Mine have WXGA+ (1440x900) @ 17" but i'm ready to the next mod;).
BTW. on 51nb there is hint that it is possible to integrate IPS to this behemoth (on picture was W700 but...). I have found only 1 IPS for 17" 16:10 - and it is HP's DreamColor from 8740w. Bad things - that there is no details on tis mod. And DreamColor is 2ch 10 bit LVDS + RGB LED backlit while W700 is only 2ch 8bit LVDS with CCFL;(

I have the set - SIM card reader and the VZW card - somewhere. Yours for asking.

Hate to bring you down, but the mod - according to people who actually work on both of these systems on regular basis - is NOT possible. Not without *major* alterations. I've been considering this project for the longest time, but have eventually given up on it.

It might be for the Wimax things, ajkula66 can probably tell you more
as for W701 they are too huge to be moved around so according to posts from 51nb thery were only shipped out with wifi+BT or Wifi+Wimax+BT
guess W700 is about the same
or it could be just a 5-penny-sticker from taobao :P

Regarding DC screens on W701, Leokim has did it, you can probably find his posts on 51nb but it also requires an inverter from HP (since MXM 3 outputs 8 bit colors and the screen is 10 bit) and needs BIOS modification. Maybe we will eventually get there, just like the T61 1066FSB CPU project

But comparing to upgrading the screen, I'm more interested in upgrading the graphics card to AMD ones or at least Quadro K2100m, if that's ever possible...... :|

The W700 has 3 mini-pci slots and no sim card slot.

Even thinkwiki.org is wrong and doesn't list the 3rd slot (I think they used to, but it seems to be removed now).

Slot 1: Wifi card (Intel 5150 / 5300 / 5350). 3 antenna wires routed to this slot.

Slot 2: Intel Turbo Memory card

Slot 3: Wireless USB card (one antenna wire to this slot).

Never heard of any W700's actually delivered with a WUSB card installed. This 'standard' was dead on arrival with almost nobody supporting it.

My question is, can this 3rd slot be used for anything else? A GPS card maybe?

And where is the 2nd slot?? 1 and 3 under the main keyboard (near the CPU and MCH).

Theoretically any slot can be used for anything it can accept. GPS needs USB lanes from mini PCIe slot - so wUSB slot is first to try. BIOS can block unauthorized card but this is other story.
