Ivit, you might want to do some research and consider changing from Compact Flash + 34mm expresscard to 34mm + something else(maybe 34mm+54mm or 34mm + Smart Card). I ordered a CF reader with my W700 and unfortunately found out -after- the fact that there's some sort of design failure on Lenovo's part to make the CF reader high speed. Translation: CF is way too slow for most usage. I ended up ordering a USB CF reader to get better throughput. Don't remember for sure, but I think there's some faster CF readers available to be used through either a 34mm or 54mm Express Card slot.

I suspect the CF reader was carried over unchanged from the W700 to the W701.

Check it out, regardless. Shouldn't be a problem if you contact Lenovo soon.

I'm even considering buying a replacement port package for my W700 to swap out the CF for a 54mm Express card...

Thank you AMATX. I really wanted CF reader, but now after reading your post I'm a bit confused. Unfortunately, I couldn't find lots of info on CF reader in W701ds. I hope you're wrong and Lenovo made some improvements to CF reader in W701. I really appreciate your comments on this.

Is it a big deal to replace the module once I receive it? What's the price range, if that's possible?

Ivit, if you want to change your port config to get rid of the CF, it's better to contact Lenovo before your order is processed and the W701 is built. That way, should be no problem. And, since you've got some time before they build & ship it to you, call Lenovo and check with them. You should have a few days or weeks to be able to do this, but call them NOW, just to be safe.

After market, for a W700, I found the OEM replacement part on ebay(I think) for ~$150. The gizmo is a combo device that houses both of the two ports you order with the laptop. So, you swap out the 34mm/CF device and insert another combo device that would contain say, the 34mm+54mm ports.

I haven't actually done the swap, and have not taken apart my W700 see know how difficult it is to replace, but after looking at parts diagrams, if one has some prior experience with computers, it doesn't look too bad(HA, famous last words!). I would assume the W701 setup is similar(if not exactly the same) as in the W700.

Good luck...

My 7-1/2 year old A31p finally cannot be resurrected, so I ordered a W510 on 5/20. Lenovo site said two weeks, but the date on the confirmation says June 10 (three weeks). I considered waiting for the FHD, but it could be months. Thanks to others for advice!

It shows 4318CT, which isn't a complete model number, so I'll see what's on the box and computer. I got HD+, 1.73GHz quad core, 4GB, and fingerprint reader, color scanner and all the "wireless gadgets" except cellular card. I ordered the mini-doc+ Series 3. I think I've read that mentioning price is verboten here, although that was expected in the early days.

I will pick up a 23 or 24" monitor. I really like the Dell Ultra-sharps, so will look at the new 23" reviews.

My employer may send a new W500 to replace my T60p. That might be fun, to have two similar machines to side by side the different displays.

More when it actually arrives.

Update 6/9/2010:

Machine shipped 5/27 arrived 6/7 - I should have spent the $20 for 2nd Day shipping.

I got the right machine, and it works as promised.

- It hangs when it goes to sleep with an external monitor attached. I think some updates should fix that, but I've read that some bios rev causes the machine to brick, so I'm moving slowly. I've also read of troubles with some SSD and big problems with the Gobi air card for ATT, so I'm glad I don't have that.

- The fancy Plus docking station is pretty cool. I need to memorize which ports are where, and am thinking about getting the Dell 23" Ultrasharp monitor to use with the Display Port. I'm wondering what gadget I need to get to adjust the colors on that monitor like the sensor + software does with my laptop screen.

- Ho, boy, do I like the fingerprint reader, but I'll probably keep the lid closed, so want to get a kbd with print reader - looking for feedback on the Lenovo kbd with print reader. It's wired, which I don't like, but understand why.

- The power utility talks about having a Threshold setting in Battery Maintenance to allow the battery to discharge a good bit before charging, but Threshold does not exist in that dialog.

- The N wireless works great around the house. I put an N router in the attic (hopefully the summer heat won't fry it).

CK

All issues are fixed - what an excellent machine. most responsive I've ever had running Windoze.

- I used the ThinkVantage tool to download and install all updates, including optional. But NOT the BIOS.
- I downloaded the .iso BIOS version and burned a CD, rebooted and installed.

That fixed the issues above. No others found. I ordered a Dell U2410 monitor @ 30% off. Should be here in a week or so.

I ordered my W701 on 5/3 and it showed an estimated ship date of 5/25. On the 25th the estimate went away for most of the day, and was ultimately replaced by 6/22, a full month later. When I inquired with my sales rep I said that there was a quality issue with "41U6188 MXM card" but I can't find what that is. Aaaargh. Time to look at Dell M6500 again.

Update 6/5/10: I ruled out the M6500 but was seriously considering a W700 off ebay. Indecision ruled, and paid off. My W701 shipped from China yesterday (6/4) and is scheduled for delivery 6/10.

Hi,

My brother is leaving the United States on Nov 11 so I thought that it would be great if he can carry a Thinkpad for me with him. I ordered it on Oct 15. However, after reading both your posts and Lenovo's forum ones, I started to beleive that I'll never receive my Thinkpad before he leaves :( . Fortunatly I've received it today! The estimated date from China that they've put on their website was Oct 28 and as you can read I've received it on Oct 26 (that includes the UPS shipping of course).

It took them 4 days to ship it from china to the US which is amazing! :D

Just ordered my W520 - 4270CTO

#99 Post by MikeM » Mon Apr 04, 2011 2:00 am

yay!

I just pulled the trigger on a new W520 and managed to find a decent coupon before doing so. :)

I got the following:

Processor Intel Core i7-2820QM Processor (2.30GHz, 8MB L3)
Operating system Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64
Operating system language Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64 English
Display type 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) LED Backlit Anti-Glare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready
System graphics NVIDIA Quadro 2000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3 Memory
Color sensor Color Sensor
Total memory 4 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)
Keyboard Keyboard US English
Pointing device UltraNav with TrackPoint & touchpad plus Fingerprint reader
Camera 720p Camera
Storage subsystem Internal RAID - Not Enabled
Hard drive 500 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
Optical device DVD recordable multiburner
System expansion slots Express Card Slot & 4 in 1 Card Reader
Battery 9 cell Li-Ion Battery - 55++
Power cord Country Pack North America with Line cord & 170W AC adapter
Bluetooth Bluetooth 3.0
Integrated WiFi wireless LAN adapters Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 (3x3 AGN)
Integrated mobile broadband Integrated Mobile Broadband - Upgradable
Language pack Language Pack US English

I grabbed the 3 year priority onsite warranty + 3 year ThinkPad Protection and another 170 watt AC adapter while I was there since their price was OK online.

Now I have to go order 3x 4GB DIMMs and an 80GB mSATA card (wish me luck finding one), and I was thinking that I'd maybe pick up a Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet to play with before I retire my credit card.

I'm happier than a bird with a french fry.

Congratulation Mike. I'm happy for you. Now I guessed you can twiddle you thumbs while waiting ;-) Have fun with your new toy when you get it, and do put the credit card away.

May I ask how much did you pay for everything?

Cheers,

The whole Lenovo order was $2710 with tax. Add to that about $200 for the Intel 310 mSATA card that I ordered and another $150-200 for ram that I will purchase after the unit arrives. It came out less than the MacBook Pro I was looking at and less than the desktop computer build that I had done all my homework on, so I'm happy about that too.

My wife is happy, because she was sure that if I bought the Mac that I'd need $10,000 in new software to replace what I have here. :D

Hey MikeM, looks like we got very similar laptops. I've been waiting for the W520 for a very long time as I do a fair amount of gaming when I'm off the clock and the Quadro 2000M is the first "big" graphics upgrade I've seen in years over the Quadro FX 570M in my T61p.

I see you went for the same CPU I did too... 2820QM. I just couldn't justify another $500 for the slight bump up to "Extreme Edition." As for explaining this whole purchase to the wife it was easy because now she inherits the T61p which is a huge upgrade over her old boat anchor Dell Inspiron and its ancient Pentium 4.

Only differences I see in our orders is you got a better warranty, color sensor, and second AC adapter while I got a little more RAM. Total for me came to $2340 with tax. I'm not a Duke hoops fan but somehow I found a way to force myself to type "BLUEDEVILS" for $230... 8)

I almost feel like we need a new sticky called "W520 Shipping Thread"... I'm as excited as you are!

Thanks Mike. Seems like you've maxed out the system. I just wished I have that much money in the bank to configure one similar ;-)

I noticed on your signature that you used to have a VIC-20. I used to have one too... I recalled doing some programmings on it. I would spend hours writing programs for it, then when I'm tired and done with the program I turn off the computer and poof goes the program. I also have a Sinclair 1000 too. How much things have changed since then!

Cheers,
Gnimble

Do you guys have estimated shipping dates from Lenovo for your W520s?

I'm really curious to know how fast they are with delivery.

I believe that's mine up at the top of my invoice I copied in my last post... 4/19/11. I think maybe if you stick with more of the default options you might get a faster shipment, I'm loading up a bit on mine 8)

kb3edk wrote:Hey MikeM, looks like we got very similar laptops.

I almost went for the preconfigured monster that comes with the X processor and 16 gigs of ram and no vPro, but I actually wanted the vPro. I also couldn't use the BLUEDEVILS coupon code, so I just did the CTO thing and got this one. I saved enough that it covered my sales tax, which was dandy by me. The W520 is the first laptop that I have run into that offers the Sandy Bridge Extreme processor, and while it was tempting, I had visions of frying eggs on my keyboard. I seem to do best ordering the second fastest processor available on whatever laptop I'm looking at, and this one is going to be a screamer.

My estimated ship date is 4/19. What's yours?

When I was a young person I worked with a guy that had no bills and his home and truck were all paid off. He had a little bit of money set aside and what was cool is that he did not have to take any BS from anyone because he was FREE. That stuck with me for years, so I did the same thing. It's great. I'm not rich, but having zero bills sure frees up the loot for stuff like this.

Well, then again, I *am* rich. If you have enough money to pay all of your bills and have a dollar left over you're rich.

My first computer was a kit that I built when I was a teenager. It was a mechanical computer kit that my Aunt bought me. The first electronic computer that I had was the VIC-20. I traded a bag of bermuda grass fertilizer for it to a neighbor that was selling it at a garage sale. I got hooked on them then. I had the plotter and I snagged a C64 and then I was running a BBS on the C64 and got a C128. I ran the BBS on the C128 and got an Amiga 1000 but I never wanted to run a BBS on the Amiga, so I bought a 10Mhz XT clone to run the BBS on and pretty soon I was running the largest Amiga BBS west of the Mississippi on a PC clone using EBBS and then Searchlight BBS. I remember those old USRobotics black 9600 baud modems that looked like surfboards. I used to program and sell doorware when Turbo Pascal was the way to go on the PC and Amiga software using the Lattice C compiler. Then I started to play with assembler code. I like assembler, but it was more fun using MS-DOS when you could more readily hit the hardware than it is under Windows. I still play with assembler under Linux from time to time. That VIC-20 was awesome. I still have my Amiga 1084 monitor up in the attic. It was great to use when I was all into video games. I used to have my NeoGeo system hooked up to it.

I never had a Sinclair.... I did have users on my early BBS that had them.

Does Louiville shutdown or is it essential?

#110 Post by davidhbrown » Wed Apr 06, 2011 5:30 am

My W520 is scheduled to ship April 8... the same day the (USA) Federal government might shut down. Anyone know whether the customs clearing center in Louiville KY that UPS uses will continue to operate during a shutdown?

Edit/update: An email from UPS: "Thank you for your inquiry. Since Customs is the government, the Customs Clearing Center in Louisville, Kentucky would not continue to operate."

I was wishfully imagining they might be considered essential to protecting property :-) Guess not.

I *almost* did not find your post. I thought my thread had vanished!!
Yeah I decided to go with the second fastest proc this time, on my T61p I chose one of the slower processors (with only 3MB cache) and wound up having some slight regrets later on.

As for this post "vanishing," it seems the mods work quickly around here to combine threads if the opportunity arises :)

And yes my ship date is also 4/19 although if davidhbrown is correct, we might get unlucky and have some customs delays.

My first computer was a TRS-80 Color Computer II with 16K of RAM and a tape cassette drive, I didn't actually build my own computer from parts until much later (around 15 years ago I cobbled together something with a Cyrix 233MHz chip... remember those guys? haha)

Finally, congrats thinkstone on getting such a great deal on your W520! Is that with tax included? I can see how mine cost so much more than yours but you will still be running circles around most other laptops out there... good choice on sticking with the quad core, I am hearing a lot of good things about this CPU 8)

The price is without sales tax - ProVantage didn't charge it.

Yes, the W520 should be a really nice upgrade from my personal 6 year old R51, and even from my employer provided T410. :D

And I ordered an Intel 310 80 GB mSata and an additional 4 GB RAM to make it even nicer...

W520 ship date changed from Apr'8 to Apt'14

#113 Post by averkiev » Thu Apr 07, 2011 3:32 am

The ship date for my W520 has been changed from Apr'8 to Apr'14th. I ordered ICI7-2820QM with FHD screen.
This really sucks :(

Am I alone or others had ship dates of their W520’s postponed also?

Same here, both as to dates, CPU, and screen. No email from Lenovo; had to go look.
Well, that should give the Federal Government a few days to be shut down to make their various ideological points...

Managed to overheat my T61p last night while rendering video; it shut down unexpectedly and there's a message in the system log about limiting the processor speed by system firmware. (I think maybe TPFanControl doesn't like me locking the console?) The W520 would really help!

Blast from the past

#115 Post by davidhbrown » Thu Apr 07, 2011 3:01 pm

Just for grins, I googled "lenovo thinkpad shipping delay" and one of the top hits was this blast from the past:
Demand for ultrawideband (UWB) technology has led to month-long shipment delays for Lenovo's ThinkPad T61 laptops, according to a company spokeswoman.

"We have had an extremely high demand for UWB technology in the ThinkPad T61, and there is some delay for those systems," Lenovo spokeswoman Kristy Fair said in an e-mail.
Oh, well... (yes, my T61p has that module... doing nothing)

Just got an email from Lenovo to say that my W520 (CTO on 3/29 with i7-2820QM, FHD screen, Quadro 2000) has shipped on April 8 after all, despite the bump in the previous status page to 4/14.

My apologies to any USA Federal Government employees/contractors on the forum... I suspect there is a corollary to Murphy's law that says that because my Thinkpad did ship, government will shut down so as to leave it stranded at customs. I know that a shutdown will inconvenience you more than me.

Update: My W520 got to Louisville just a couple hours after the Federal Government *didn't* shut down... should arrive Monday morning :-)

4270CTO ordered 3/29 arrived 4/11 AM (2nd-day UPS upgrade). FHD screen, 2820QM, color sensor (probably *really* needed if the FHD screen is only 6bit D/A!)

Lucky you David!
Mine have been stuck in Louisville, KY with "This shipment is warehoused until it is released by Clearing Agency" status since 4/10 :(
