T30 to R40 processor swap

#1 Post by petemosss » Fri May 25, 2012 10:26 am

Will the 2.0 ghz process. Out of my donor t30 (2366-88u) mfg. 3/03 replace the 1.3 ghz out of my r40 (2722-6yu) mfg. 3/09?

Will my t30 hd boot in the r40?

Thanks!

No.

Your T30 is P4M while the R40 is PM, completely different platforms.

The hard drive from T30 may or may not boot in R40, but a CPU swap is defintely a no-go.

The question of whether the HDD will boot is a matter of what OS is installed, as the drive itself is compatible. So the T30 HDD definitely will work in a R40. But, if you are asking about booting the same OS as is installed in the T30...that depends. If its Linux of any sort...probably yes. Windows of any NT flavor...most likely no. A fresh install of whatever is the best way to go anyway.

On the CPU...that 1.3GHz PM will probably perform as fast, or faster, than the 2GHz P4M in the T30 anyway, so no need to even think about a swap. If you want faster in the R40, you could look for a 1.7GHz PM, they are fairly cheap.
Collection = T430 - T500 - R400 - X300 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - R61 (15" SXGA+) - T60 - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P

Thanks much. The OS on both is xp pro. I am trying to get an OCR program going and recommended is 2ghz dual core and 2G ram. I have ram en-route and we'll see what happens. I wanted to use my dock and ultrabay goodies but I think I need to look at something heftier. t60,61?

Yessir, if you need 2GHz dual core, neither the T30 or R40 meet the requirement. A high end T60 would.
