R60 hanging during beginning of OS installation

#1 Post by kelmaur » Sun May 27, 2012 10:18 pm

i have an R60...type 9459-CTO and i have been trying to reinstall windows 7 on it.

i bought it second hand (w/Win 7 on it) and it worked fine until one day the system started hanging and making noise, so i thought the HD was going out so i bought a new HD and every time i try to load Win7 on it hangs (at a different spot every time) during the collection of info (before the actual installation of Windows)..it doesnt matter if it is win7..i have tried linux as well and it does the same thing

anyone have any suggestions, comments, etc....

thanks in advance

I'd test the RAM first with mem86, it's a part of most Linux installation disks, and then take it from there...

Check in the BIOS under Config/Serial ATA if the controller is set to AHCI or Compatibility.
Try the other setting of what it is now.

ok...memory test passed...

i made that change (set on compatibility and changed to ACHI) and still the same thing hung up at the ACCEPT TERMS AND CONDITIONS page

now i get a blue screen of death waiting on the OS disk to load up with the following

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Run the hard disk test utility from BIOS.

How's your battery?

I've known the odd machine to show that behaviour (admittedly during XP setup rather than Windows 7) because they were overheating. I don't suppose you can get to the fan with a small paint brush and clean the blades?

Taking the battery out was the key IMO.

A bad battery is known to freeze a R6x/T6x/X6x/Z6x dead quite often...
