This is a Thinkpad 2883, which I believe is an R51 machine.

When I push the start button, I hear four beeps. The screen never lights up and it stays blank. It never goes beyond that stage.

I am a total beginner.

A friend who has some knowledge took the battery out and pushed some buttons that he said would clear any electrostatic charge. He also removed the CD drive, battery, and I think the ram chip. He got nowhere and put it back together and told me he couldn't help.

Can anyone advise me? Again, I am a total beginner. I may not be able to follow instructions about what to take apart. I can push buttons, though, if the instructions are clear.

Many thanks to anyone who can help me!

Thanks for your reply. I'm afraid that a lot of what is on that page is over my head. Is it possible for you to offer a specific suggestion for what is likely to help? Many thanks!
