SXGA IPS in G41 (CCFL bulb change)

#1 Post by Medessec » Fri Feb 22, 2013 6:07 am

Welp, after having finished my high-spec G41 for so long, I've finally got an SXGA+ IPS for it. The leftover one from the T60p.

So, I had to slap it in and see what the G41 had to give. It took to it instantly, however there are a couple of problems:

-The backlight plug isn't long enough. The screen can't go in, because the inverter is too far over
-The screen is dimming. Need to change bulb...?

But I booted into XP with it, and it's looking brilliant.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

Update to topic - I've decided to simply attempt to change the CCFL bulb in the SXGA+ IPS that I removed from the T60p to put in the G41.

After looking at a couple of guides, I got my practice in on a busted G40 screen I happen to have(actually, I have like, 4. ) Then started carefully on the SXGA IPS. It was a bit different, but I eventually got to it.

After putting it back together and plugging it into the G41, it does look pretty good. Brighter than before, but... there seems to be a smudge spot towards the bottom left corner, where I guess I touched the big glassy piece. Whoops. I might get a picture of it.

Aye- your guide was one of the guides I inspected before going ahead. Yours was more bang-on with the IPS than my practice session with the conventional XGA that was busted.

I haven't been able to get the smudge out... even after going through all the transparent layers and the LCD with a microfiber cloth... so I suspect it may require some more attention. I've removed the IPS for now and put back the standard SXGA+ I had in the G41 before.

That is going to be a slick G41.

That makes me want to go build a G41 also.
.....but WHY ???

G41s are a bit fun, mostly because they're also easy, because parts and bits are dirt cheap. Finding one that's in good shape is a bit hard because... well, they were budget machines, so people didn't bother to take good care of them. At least, not as much as T-series.

There's really not much to it. You can find a unit with a 3.46 GHz(good luck) or just buy a 3.06 GHz/Celeron G41 and get a 3.46GHz for it(usually cheaper and easier. It NEEDS to be the SL7NC, Prescott 478-pin 552 Pentium 4. Any others WILL brick the mobo. Then decide if you want the GeForce chipped one(no Floppy Drive) or the Intel graphics one, with the Internal floppy drive. Then add an IPS if you get around to it, and you've got the ultimate G-series.

I went a step further and made sure all the panels on mine were near mint. The lid is the only one I failed at(it has scuffs at an angle), everything else looks like it just came out of the box.

It's hard to justify why anyone would like the G-series. They're not particularly useful, even when compared to a T30. They're just beastly, crazy-looking things.
