R50e and black (dim) screen

#1 Post by alkalz » Tue Apr 23, 2013 2:38 pm

hi all,
i have a R50e and the screen is very dim. I have two screens and two inverters and made every possible combination between them to find what is wrong. Always the same dim screen. When working with external monitor everything is ok. Do you believe it is a motherboard fault? Is there any possibility to be something easier than motherboard so i can fix it by myself?

Are those screens OK in another laptop?
Your GPU is Intel graphics, which rarely (if ever) goes wrong.
Another possibility is a bad LCD cable...
Try to disconnect/reconnect the (motherboard side) LCD-connector a few times.

I dont have another laptop so i cant try, but i dont think both screens or both inverters have problem at the same time! I m not sure if i can reach the other side of lcd cable without destroying the laptop! but when i find the time i ll give it a try. Do i have to open up the entire laptop to do it or just the keybord and the palmrest? I' ll try to find a video but if you know or if you have a link video to show it would be great. Anyway, thank you very much for your help!

Download this PDF file (HMM) with all illustrated instructions: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-54932
You'll only need to remove keyboard and keyboard bezel to access the LCD connector.

Does the screen light up at all? If there's no backlight present whatsoever, you likely have a blown fuse on the motherboard.

ajkula 66, the screen is always dim but I can see that it works if I look at it carefully. I have read that other people have a bright screen for 1-2 minutes and then goes dim. Mine is not. It is always dim. I know that maybe the problem is a motherboard fuse but I was wondering if it was a fuse then the screen should be absolute black not dim. Maybe I’ m wrong. Also, this fuse affects only backlight or it should have made and other problems on other components? Everything else seems to work fine.

I had already download the manual, RealBlackStuff, but from paper to practice there is always distance! I’ll try it, it seems easy, I have already change screen and inverter so I’ m in a good way!

Thank you, I’ ll let you know about it!

On my website (see my signature) is a link to "how to replace a T4x motherboard" which shows a lot more details than the HMM.
That T4x is almost a 'sister' of your R50e, so might be helpful.

Great work, very helpful!

I tried it and was one step away to reach the cable. I removed keybord and saw cable. It isn' t so difficult. But i didn' t have the right screwdriver for those 3 small screws under the battery case and i couldn' t remove the keybord bezel. Next time! At least, it works again (with external monitor) after the surgery! Thanks!
