I'm working on a Z60M that appears to be getting power as the power light & battery charging lights are on, but when I press the power button nothing happens. The AC adapter is putting out 20V like it should & I've stripped down the laptop to just the motherboard & CPU, but still can't get it to boot.
Since the power button is built into the keyboard I have no way of testing if it's bad. Is there some sort of key combination I can press that would power on the laptop or can I jump the keyboard connector leads on the motherboard?
Take a look at our

Re: Z60M isn't powering on.
Welcome to thinkpads.com!
I would not recommend trying to jumper pins inside the keyboard connector. There's a good chance you may make the problem worse. There are two paths you can try, both require an outlay of $$$ or if you're fortunate, you can find somebody nearby and borrow what you need:
1) Swap out the keyboard with a known good unit
2) Put the Z60m in a port replicator or docking station and use the power button on that to try turning the system on.
If neither of these work, then you may be looking at a motherboard problem. There have also been reports of the magical "bleeding of the capacitors" technique that restores systems like this. It goes like this: Remove all power from the system (AC and battery). Press the power button multiple times (10-20), with the final push holding down the power button for several seconds (10-15). Re-attach the AC adapter and attempt to boot.

Does it beep when you try to power it on? If not, it's probably time for a new board, which shouldn't be too expensive on eBay.sillay wrote:I've stripped down the laptop to just the motherboard & CPU, but still can't get it to boot.
