So I just bought two locked R60s on Ebay...

#1 Post by 28CarsLater » Mon Oct 21, 2013 4:48 pm

Both are 'locked" by the security chip but the seller confessed he acquired them to unlock them and never got around to it, no details given other than the model and they are promised to be intact and POSTing. For $30 with shipping at worst I figured they would make parts computers for the four I "support" inc mine. But depending on which models are sent (14 vs 15) and their overall conditions I may attempt one or both as frankenpads. I have a beat up (but working) headless T61 (I believe 15in) I might be able to swap its board into the complete R60 (or R60 screen to it), and for the other I was thinking something really wacky/challenging, any thoughts? Thanks.

Hey 28CarsLater, welcome to Thinkpads.com!

Thoughts?.... Just wait 'til you receive the R60s, and see what you've got. Then we can decide what to do with the parts.
Collection = T430 - T500 - R400 - X300 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - R61 (15" SXGA+) - T60 - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P

Thanks Neil. I have a shelf full of thinkpads and related parts always up for a nice hack.

I recently got a bios locked x61t, can't mess with bios unless that security chip is fixed...
Anyays, I was able to do the middletion bios upgrade without bricking it.
I couldn't boot from a USB, middleton worked because I had the dock and DVD, can't press F12 but it can boot the HDD to the OS,
but the boot order settings allowed DVD booting, haven't triend an OS DVD to install something on the HDD.

Since I have a similar X61T, I figure I would install an OS then just pull the drive.
I just hope that it isn't locked to where you can't boot anything to it, if anything you could sell the boards for a lower price...
