14" R40 run a T41p SXGA+ screen?

#1 Post by misfit » Mon Aug 29, 2011 7:13 pm

Nice quick question my friends, all in the subject. I've found an auction that's got six hours to run for a T41p lid and the only 14" machine I'm currently running is an R40 with a 1.7 Banias and ATI 7000 / 16MB. It'd be nice to have it SXGA+ but I can't afford the money for the screen if it won't work.

Help please?
Shaun.

It likely won't work.

R40 was never offered with a 14" SXGA+ screen, hence sourcing a proper LCD cable could prove to be an insurmountable difficulty.

Motherboard connections are quite different between R4x and T4x units, so you wouldn't be able to utilize the existing cable from T41p.

Thanks for the quick response George, I'll pass on the auction then. I only asked as I have a 15" R40 that's running an SXGA+ (non-FV) screen (which incidentally wouldn't work in an R51, but that's another story...) so I thought that the 14" might be able to do it too.

Cheers,
Shaun.

AFAIK the T23 XGA LCD (IDTech ITXG76H) will also work in an R32/R40, when using the T23 inverter.
This would bear the question if a T23 SXGA+ LCD would also work...

Thanks Dom, so many parts of the puzzle... If I had more money it'd be great to spend time buying up older TPs and answering some of these questions. I have the time as I'm an invalid, I just don't have the money. :|

I'm fairly certain that one could get any of these screens to work with a *proper* cable...

Now, what that would be in this particular situation is the question that I have no answer to...

I'd say that the cable in my 15" R40 that's running SXGA+ would do the job (if a tad long) but I'm using that one.....

I don't believe that I've ever seen a pre-Lenovo ThinkPad that uses the same cable for both 14" and 15" SXGA+...

Ok. I'm not saying that the same cable would be standard, just that both R40s have the same connector on the planar and, possibly, as the cable in question is working with a 15" non-FV SXGA+ it might work also with a 14" (non-FV) SXGA+.

I just checked my mailbox and, as there were no pleasant financial surprises (quite the opposite, car insurance due..) and there hasn't been a "Yes. it'll work fine using one of the cables you have" type reply here I think I'll let the auction close without a bid.

Thanks for all of the input guys, much appreciated.

The 14" and 15" R40 cable should have the same size connector, however you will probably find the 15" R40 cable looks different in that it's "fatter" than it's 14"counterpart, and, as you mentioned, a tad longer than it's 14"counterpart. It's a good thing IBM designed them to look a bit different, although they (probably) both fit because what would likely happen, as happened to me, (IIRC), when trying to use a 14" R51 cable on a 15" R51 LCD is that it will display but part of the screen (about 1/4) is whited out.
