wrong fan sent for CPU

#1 Post by Riktar » Thu Jul 05, 2012 5:48 pm

Ok this is a picture of what I have in my R51:

And this is what I was sent:

While I have no problem with the extra "part" that would go over what looks like a northbridge chip, the cooling tube for that is being blocked by the heatsink that covers my (I am assuming) Graphics GPU.

Anyone run into this? I dont suppose I can grind out the offending parts of the GPU heatsink, huh?

Hi, what is the FRU P/N on your original R51 fan (which looks like the classic R51 fan I have in one of my R51 machines), and the FRU P/N (and any other numbers you can find) on the one they sent you?

I have a large box of miscellaneous Thinkpad fans and I think I've seen something shaped like that one (they sent you). It's probably for certain other R51 models.

In any case, I wouldn't go grinding away anything yet... These R51 fans are pretty inexpensive.

Daniel.

Also, what is the 7-digit type/model number on the back of your laptop to the left of the S/N (Serial Number) ?

I generally don't work on these any more, but what I remember is that all (integrated and discrete) use the same fan and the discrete models (like yours) have a separate heatsink for the GPU. I looked and I have one in my "old fans" box (FRU 13N5182) that is clean and spins freely. If you want it, cheap, send me a pm
