R40 Cpu Swap Question

#1 Post by jasew503 » Tue Jul 19, 2011 10:58 am

I noticed on thinkwiki that the R40 came with The Celeron-M, Pentium-M and Pentium 4 CPUs. Are these all interchangable with a Board that has a P-M 1.6 on it? Thanks
Current Systems: T41-1.6/1G/80G, MB Pro-iC/4G/320G, Dell M70-2.0/2G/120G/FX1400
Past Thinkpads: 600/E/X's, T20's, T21/22's/23, A22p

No.

A PM board will only work with a PM CPU, Banias 1.7 being the highest point.

Dothan-core PM CPUs do not work on R40 units.

The other boards (P4M/Celeron) can do either of these, but not PM.

Gotcha, do these also suffer the GPU/motherbaord issues like the T4x's do?

Thats good to know, any idea what causes that? Also, are the R40s supposed to be thinner/smaller/lighter than the T series? whats the difference?

Quite the opposite, actually. Thicker and heavier.

R40/e was an economy series built by Acer under IBM license. Although I'm personally quite fond of them, they do not have too many fans left nowadays.

Somewhat of a weird duck model, although not without charm of its own, in my book.

They're extremely cheap to maintain, though, in case of failure. An entire barebone machine can be had for less than $50...

Made by acer? the reason i ask is there is a guy who want to trade me 2 thinkpad T20s that are parts machines (one has a bad backlight, the other hangs at the IBM logo) for an R40 with a 1.6 P-M/512mb/40GB. Supposedly working and passes all diag tests. Good trade then?

Heck no.

R40 is way more usable machine in today's day and age than a T20...

If T20s are yours, go for it, but not the other way around...

Yep T20s are mine, the guy wants them for parts and wants to trade me an R40 complete unit running Debian for them.
