Z61P with an awful screen

#1 Post by mnowell69 » Tue Jul 10, 2012 2:07 pm

ok, so i got a z61p from my friend who said it was "okay". The screen has various shadowy spots on it, that you only see when the background is white, look a bit like little patches of mould. The other thing about the screen is the lighting. It is very even, no problems there, but just doesn't seem all that bright. Sooooooooooo i was wondering if the brightness is in fact natural for this type of screen ( because i have become used to LED screens) or if there is something amiss?

The shadowy spots are pressure marks. The low brightness was reported quite often on screens of that generation.

If you have the WUXGA LCD, it's rated at 175 nits, which is on the low side for a LCD. Plus it's a CFFL, which can dim over time.

The good news is that you can do a panel swap with any Lenovo 15.4" WXGA, WSXGA+ or UXGA panel from the Z60m to the T/W/R500 models.

thanks for the replies. It is a WUXGA panel, and it's good to know i can change the panel to something more modern. I probably won't bother as i am sure it's not going to be financially viable. It is a shame because otherwise it is in excellent condition. :(

I'd second Underclockers advice for a newer generation panel. I've swapped panels on our various Z6x machines several times now and they all look pretty dark to me compared to what we've had before. I'm in the process of moving my wife to a T61 for exactly that reason. Hopefully, it's enough newer to not have the issue.
Family Daily Drivers- T450s, T540p
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP Chromebox drone machines :(
ThinkPad Projects- T530, T400, R60, Z60t
Historic Retired ThinkPads- Z61m (Titanium), X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505, C500

i assume it has to be a standard lcd, and not an LED type screen.

That is correct.
