windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit on X201s?
windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit on X201s?
I re-post my question here.
I am buying a second hand X201s, (with an Intel® Core i7-640LM processor) and the seller let me choose between Windows 7 32 bit (with 3Gb RAM) from the original Lenovo disks, or Windows 7 64 bit (with 4 Gb RAM) from a his own copy.
What should I do?
In case I choose the 64 bit version, will the license key under the laptop be still valid, or I will have an "illegal" OS on my laptop?
thanks a lot in advance,
A.

Re: windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit on X201s?
choose the 32 bit OS, as this will give you a recovery image.
Then download the 64 bit version iso off the web and activate it using the serial number that you got from under the laptop.

I forget to mention that in case I choose the 64 bit, the seller will send me the recovery disk of the 32 bit version.
So, will my installation of an ISO off the web in any case delete the Lenovo hidden partition like the seller installation?
Just another doubt.
I was reading this
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-74752
the laptop has a German origin.
will this be a problem for activating the serial number to work with an italian version of windows 7 64 bit?

when you do a fresh install you can choose to delete the hidden partition, if the seller is sending the recovery media then yes.
The OS is language specific, so if that version is for German don't think the serial number would work for the Italian language install. I personally haven't tried to know whether that is definitely the case, but from memory i think that is what happens.

with "yes" you mean to let him install the 64 bit version?lead_org wrote:when you do a fresh install you can choose to delete the hidden partition, if the seller is sending the recovery media then yes.
is there any way to put the key number somewhere to discover the language?lead_org wrote: The OS is language specific, so if that version is for German don't think the serial number would work for the Italian language install. so I should buy another license to activate the 64 bit version in case?

Re: windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit on X201s?
let him install the 64 bit so you get the 4 gigs of ram. There is no real ways of finding out which language your serial is attached to. Microsoft support line will tell you to ask Lenovo.
But if you check the Lenovo parts list with the serial and model that he gives you then, you may find out the OS language shipped.

but do I risk that copy would be impossible to activate since it is in italian and I have (probably) a German product key?lead_org wrote:let him install the 64 bit so you get the 4 gigs of ram.
I do have serial and type but I am not able to find more than these informationlead_org wrote:But if you check the Lenovo parts list with the serial and model that he gives you then, you may find out the OS language shipped.
7-640LM(2.13GHz), 3GB RAM, 320GB 7200rpm HD, 12.1in 1440x900 LCD, Intel HD graphics, Intel 802.11agn wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, X200 UltraBase+CDRW/DVDRW, Fingerprint reader, 9c Li-Ion, Win7
Pro 32
Edit: just asked to the seller the numbers of the recovery disks (32 bit) and they don't match with the official numbers listed here.
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... D=PD002579
should I suspect they are not original and well functioning?
Edit 2: he looks to have those disks (are those original or not??)

For what version of Windows 7 is the COA on your "new" X201s?
And what version does your seller want to install?
If they are the same (e.g. both W7 Professional), then the key will work for both 32 and 64 bit.
If you then also download/install an Italian copy of W7 Pro, you can re-use the same COA key.
The above is valid at least for retail copies, don't know if this applies also to OEM.
