Old Windows 7 Excel spreadsheets Now Saving As a Smaller KB Size

#1 Post by Geophyte1 » Thu Jun 02, 2016 1:34 pm

Is there any reason to be concerned about this? And, if so, what to do?
As with many people, some of my files are the result of many hours of work and I don't want to do anything to compromise any of the data.

I have an W700ds and a W541. Both computers are running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. The W700 has Office 2007 and the W541 has Office 2013. Both versions of Excel are 32 bit as far as I can tell.
Until recently I was primarily using the W700ds but have now switched to the W541.
I have systems whereby I backup/sync files to a home network HD and between the computers.
I have not noticed any problems with any files but I noticed this morning that one of my Excel spreadsheets I had opened and altered by taking one space out was saving as a much smaller file.

I then looked at the other files I hade recently altered the same way and they too were saving much smaller.

I then opened an Excel spreadsheet, which had last been saved on the W700ds in 2014, with the W541 and saved on the network HD and only altered the name slightly. I did the same with the W700ds.
The file was saved as a smaller file from both sources but the W541 was the smallest.
I then used Ultra-Compare to compare the original file with both of the "new" files and it found them all to be exact duplicates using a text compare.

Thank you.
Regards,

You have a history of backups for any important files, right? Right?

AFAIK the new-generation office files (docx, xlsx, etc.) are natively compressed, basically xml files inside zip containers. If different versions of Office have different compression presets, it could result in identical (content) files having different sizes.

Thank you. I figured it must be something like that.

My files are good to go.
