Windows Update Vs Lenovo Updates

#1 Post by evan2k » Sun Aug 28, 2011 1:07 am

Hello,
Why do they offer different updates? I get updates from lenovo applicable for the Windows 7 OS (Drivers etc), which never appear (or don't seem to appear ) on Windows Updates. Shouldn't these be offered by Microsoft as well?

I've been asking similar questions (and a few more) over on Lenovo forums. If I can share any answers I'll post them here. In addition to what you've asked I am concerned about having to reboot after each TVSU QFE update despite a patch having been issued to 'fix it'. There are also issues with some of the updates themselves. Here is one such scenario -

SU cross-referencing applicable hotfixes has ALWAYS been off. I can't remember a time when I haven't been prompted to download a fix that actually wasn't applicable to my system. Most of the package is usually correct, but there's always something that's wrong.

In general, if WU offers a graphics update that's different than what SU offers, it's recommended to stick with SU since you should assume Lenovo checked their offering for compatibility, and if it's a build that's exclusive to Lenovo, that they have also tweaked it. That said, I've never had a problem going with WU Intel updates.

I generally run SU if I see WU driver updates, install them, and then run WU again afterward.
