Good GPS navigation for windows (x86)
Good GPS navigation for windows (x86)
Anyone know a good navigation program that works on windows? XP would be preferred, but I can get Seven working too.
The original GPS in my work truck committed suicide and I hooked up my gps equipped toughbook. I nicked a copy of Autoroute from my school, but the maps are ancient. Are there any newer options?
Specs are:
Pentium M 778 1.6Ghz
1.5GB ram
SSD
Windows XP (or Seven)

Don't know what it's like in Sweden but my Father used Garmin Software on his Atom netbook for years.
Edit: Nevermind, it seems to have been discontinued...

With GPS prices coming down all the time, why not check into buying a Garmin unit with updates for life?
I know, Swedes are cheapskates (as per your own words), but a standalone unit would be way better than a laptop!

Yeah, but then I wouldn't be able to use the fancy 900 dollar GPS antenna on the roof. Besides I'd wager the Ublox 6 module is a thousand time better than any dedicated GPS unit.RealBlackStuff wrote:With GPS prices coming down all the time, why not check into buying a Garmin unit with updates for life?

Besides, consider the screen size. How big is the Garmin compared to the laptop?
Re: Good GPS navigation for windows (x86)
Standard size GPS units have 4.3 to 5 inch screens. The laptop, 13.3 inches. Touchscreen and full size keyboard.

I dispatch auto haulers for a living and this is the combo i've been using for 6 years now
- MS Streets & Trips (latest version is 2013)
- globsat bu-353
http://www.amazon.com/GlobalSat-BU-353- ... rds=bu-353
this dongle is water proof, and has a magnetic base meaning that you can mount this on top of your truck
MS streets and trips use Navtech maps (same as Garmin)
there are poi (points of interest) compilations that you can download from the internet that shows
- truckstops
- cat scales
- weigh stations
- walmart / home depot / lowes
- rest areas
i've installed on both xp and win 7 without any problems
i you have any questions, shoot me an email. its jkahng71 at gmail

Re: Good GPS navigation for windows (x86)
Thanks for the tip, mate! Streets & Trips wont work for me. I'm located in Europe. However, while googling S&T I realized that there is a new version of Autoroute (European version of S&T). I was under the mistaken impression that the last version of Autoroute was 2008.
I'm currently downloading the digital version of Autoroute. had to use an adapter and bypass the internal antenna, but i managed to hoot up the Toughbook to the truck. Which reminds me, gotta check on it so they don't try towing it again... They still haven't learned their lesson.

Looks like the GlobeSat is wired; I've been using a wireless Blutooth GPS receiver [GPSlim236] for about three years [think I paid about $35.00]. It has been working without issue; although my wife insists that it is not as quick to refresh the location as when we used the Earthmate BT-20 from DeLorme. However, the DeLorme Street Atlas seems less user friendly now than it was back in version 2009. Besides, perhaps the refresh rate may be more a function of MS Streets & Trips than of the receiver.

Re: Good GPS navigation for windows (x86)
certain toughbooks have an internal GPS option.
that will come in real handy,
the gps dongle tends to eat up usb ports after time with all the shaking that goes on in the truck...
