If it has discreet graphics it will be a real winner.pianowizard wrote:Well, the new 13.3" MacBook Pro is also IPS and is still 16:10, with 2560x1600 resolution. It weighs only 3.57 lbs, and at $1,699 it is more affordable than the 15.4" Retina. This 13-incher may be the most tempting Apple laptop yet, though I'm pretty sure I would never buy one.

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
I was considering one until i found out the ram is soldered to the board. Rubbish. Upgradeability is essential in a computer. The fact that the battery is built in i bad enough. No ta, I'll stick with a PC-Hackintosh combo.
Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
I had to order a computer for a new job I'm starting in 2 weeks.
I've had ThinkPads for years, and use a W520 in my current job (software developer). I'd get another W520, as I love the keyboard, but the screen is criminal (... compared to IPS screens that are on far inferior machines from Sony, Asus, et al).
I wanted a machine with a good screen, was relatively light, but powerful enough to do software development. I considered Sony's S-series (cheap), HP's Envy 15's (consumer), HP's ProBook w/ DreamColor (too heavy)
I ended up ordering a refurbished X220 w/ i7 (dual ), IPS, SSD, I'll throw 16GB in, and use a 27" zr2740w (no PWM flicker, I've read). I *THINK* I can even use my old dock.
.. hopefully the T540 comes out soon w/ IPS option ... one can wish ...
On-Topic: 8GB limit on the new 13" MacBook Pro? What are they thinking??

The real limit isn't the 8GB RAM, but the lack of discreet graphics. No buyer's remorse on my 15" Retina MacBook Pro.plympton wrote:I had to order a computer for a new job I'm starting in 2 weeks.

I'm secretly hoping that 15" refurbs come out soon, with a 16gb $1999 one. My budget is $2k.asiafish wrote:The real limit isn't the 8GB RAM, but the lack of discreet graphics. No buyer's remorse on my 15" Retina MacBook Pro.
Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
That's subjective to the use case. For example, in my case the opposite of the above is true.asiafish wrote:The real limit isn't the 8GB RAM, but the lack of discreet graphics.

New Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 has 13.3" 1600x900 IPS display. Can we have something like that for ThinkPad ?

I wonder if the TH05 would work on a Macbook with windows? Ofcourse that wouldn't allow to use the beatiful screen...asiafish wrote:The real limit isn't the 8GB RAM, but the lack of discreet graphics. Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
THe problem with the new 13" Retina MBP is that it lacks discrete graphics and is a dual core processor. Processor is still likely fast enough for 99% of users, but that screen begs to be used for games, and even Intel's new IGP, which drives the 15" retina panel well for most things, just isn't up to even moderate gaming.pianowizard wrote:Well, the new 13.3" MacBook Pro is also IPS and is still 16:10, with 2560x1600 resolution. Its also not enough cheaper than the 15" to make it a bargain, and not enough more powerful than a top-end 13" Air to justify the price premium, except, of course, for THAT SCREEN.
The retina MacBook Pro displays really are incredible.

Acer workstation has 15.6" FHD matte IPS display (LG Philips LP156WF4-SPB1) http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Ace ... 610.0.html
Acer (Apple, HP, Dell) can, Lenovo can't ? Maybe the panel swap would be possible, at least

Sony and Vizio also have 15" IPS laptops, and Samsung has PLS, which is equivalent to IPS.Puppy wrote:Acer (Apple, HP, Dell) can
Acer is well-known for making the cheapest laptops and monitors, and all Acer monitors I have seen are terrible, and so I always thought that Acer would be the last to offer 1920x1080 matte IPS.

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
I purchased a 15" rMBP (2.3 i7/8gb/256gb) from the Apple outlet and received 16gb RAM
The "Apple Refurb Lottery"
Like everyone else says, the screen is incredible. To me the 16x10 was a big plus.
The rMBP display at lowest scaled resolution looks better than my T60p at native 1400 x 1050
I used my T60p with an external calibrated NEC 2190UXi monitor and the rMBP is way better than that. I don't use the external monitor anymore.
Took a while to get over the idea of soldered RAM and glued battery, but I have no regrets. The SSD is easily upgradable.
I would like to see Lenovo return to the 16x10 format as well as high definition IPS panels.

Re: New MacBook Pro Retina Display is IPS
I'm just reading review of Samsung Series 7 Chronos Notebook. Interesting part is the display, it is 15" 1920x1080 matte TN panel made by AUO. It has quite impressive results considering the outdated technology, contrast ratio 1435:1 and good viewing angle stability that does not exhibit the typical color inversion both horizontally and vertically.
The question is whether the panel is truly TN because AUO is known to produce MVA panels.
