Nice (and expensive) 360PE

#1 Post by Norway Pad » Fri Nov 22, 2013 2:09 pm

Ok, so I know that as things get older, they will eventually achieve high values if they are seen as collectibles by a certain number of people. People who are willing to pay a good price to have just that car of that certain year or that other thing that was built as a one-off. But I really didn't know that Thinkpads had ended up in the expensive collectibles class before I came across this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-THINKPAD-36 ... 2a343e3ac7 I was searching for an adapter for my 360Cs, and I wondered which item had so many numbers in its price..

So I wonder; will this person be able to sell this Thinkpad for that price? I guess we won't know, but almost $200 000 for a Thinkpad must be a first. Are these really so rare?

Well, there's always the Best Offer button. I don't think it will sell at the BIN price, but what do I know about rich people?

But doesn't the seller pay eBay fees at the listed BIN price?

Perhaps, Bjørn, if you use a T43 to send Santa your Christmas list you'll get it

Yes, it must be the same. I did scroll back a couple of months to make sure this hadn't been posted before, but I didn't go as far back as that. To be honest, I doubt that even an immaculate Thinkpad like this has made it to that level price vice, so I guess it will probably stay with him for a while.

I wonder how he got a hold of it, btw. Has it been sitting around on his shelf for years, waiting to get old? Did he pick it up cheap from someone who thought it was just an old laptop, or did he pay a lot of money for it? It will be speculations only. He could of course have paid a hefty price for it, but unless you have a great personal interest in collecting old computers, I would say that paying much for an old laptop is a brave move from an investment standpoint.

As for Santa, Jenn, I think a T50 motherboard for my T43 is a better and more realistic goal. :D

Who'd seriously buy it for $200,000? That is probably the biggest waste of $200,000 I can think of.

My betting is that he secretly wants to keep it, but he has a wife or girlfriend who is getting sick of seeing it on the shelf and she wants it gone. So, he puts it on eBay for $200,000 and then if it doesn't sell, says 'well, I tried selling it but nobody bought it!' ;)

I once sold an IBM 5140 and when all was said and done, the buyer paid a little over $600 to have it.

$600 is a lot less than $200,000.

Granted, he paid a lot and you made some good money, but who in their right mind would pay $200,000 for ANY computer?

I had to look that machine up. Interesting from a certain standpoint. The price of $2,000 at introduction is not bad at all. Maybe they were able to keep the price down by using a non backlit LCD and making the hard disk and serial/parallel ports optional.

I looked up that same thing, but on page 16 in this list ftp://john.ccac.rwth-aachen.de/pub/mirr ... ichart.pdf, the price for the 360PE is listed as $3699 with the 340Mb drive. With the same size drive, my 360Cs was $2749.

And being in ones right mind is relative. People at work think I am out of my mind when I tell them I have 12 Thinkpad laptops at my house.. Collecting laptops is obviously not as commonly accepted as collecting stamps and coins.

I think this guy is adamant that he's going to get 200 grand for it. It looks like two people have offered and he's declined, haha!

I would love to grab a NOS hardware and upgrade the internals of it. I know about the T50 but maybe I could salvage a netbook and toss it onto a 345XD I got or 240...

But that figure is a lot. Maybe a fifth of that asking price

I do have a 360PE 2620 for sale on ebay. I decided to post this up in response to the $200,000 that this seller is asking for on his Thinkpad.

Here's the link:

If anyone is interested in it, let me know. I really wish I had the pen drivers for it.

As the seller is a user here, I won't comment on his auction or the pricing. It's up to each and everyone what they feel that their item may be worth. The interesting thing is that the $200 000 360PE now appears to be sold. It's no longer listed, and the original listing is marked as sold. So who knows; maybe someone put in an offer and got it (way) cheaper, or maybe there really IS a market for Thinkpad collectibles in this price range?

Ok, see it now. It doesn't ship to Norway, so it didn't show in my search results. The first time this unit was mentioned on this forum was in August 2013, so it's been out there for quite a while now..

I fully agree everybody is entitled to decide a price for its own. However, I think that amount is not realistic in my humble opinion.

Exactly! :)
As for myself, for $200 000 I would sell my entire laptop collection (not including shipping, because that would be VERY significant amount). Heck, I would even sell it for $100 000 today :)
Except 700T, 850, one of PPC110 and S30 Piano (I have matte S30 as well) of course :)

Actually, I'm not asking for $100,000, but it was more of a comical response in regards to the $200,000 the seller is asking. I've had that laptop since 2000, and was really impressed with the durability of the unit and the solid feel of the keyboad. This makes my SL510 feel so cheap. If someone offered me $1000, or even less, I would be more than happy to end the auction. :D

I'm considering getting a used T520 or a T420, as I miss the Thinklight, which my T20 has...and then sell off my SL510.

$1000 or less, that's something quite different. A nice collectible, indeed. But I already have a couple of regular 360s, and the difference really isn't so big that I can justify the price. But if this had this been a 700/710/730 Tablet I could might have given you a decent offer.

Btw, I thought eBay charged you fees according to the asking price? Or maybe it's just the actual sales price that counts. I have never sold anything on eBay, so just curious.

The ebay fees are based on the actual price of the item sold, plus the shipping fees.

Some of the phots from that auction looks like they were pulled from various ads. Ah, but what do I know?

Anyway, what was the last Thinkpad to incorporate the Thinklight feature? All the new ones seem to be missing that.

I believe there is a 360PE as well for $100,000.

Oh! There was a 730T that was in a auction, I was wrong to snatch it for under $150, it ended up being sold for $272, it had a sweet briefcase and portable printer.

Anyone here got it? :D

Before I bid I checked to see if there was any sold listings of that unit, one sold for $130 as a buy it now. It sounded like it was missing the SSF cards.

I got 360PE from Canada. On its way.
As for 730T, first one arrived yesterday and it is working perfectly, missing only box and manuals. Came with 2 extra batteries and original case/holder.
Second one is on its way, probably Thursday, with case and printer.
All these 3 machines cost me dearly, yes but I hope to exchange one of the 730T's for 710T some day :)

First. I'd like to offer my apologies. The 360P that is listed for $20,000 is my fault. The seller got it at an estate sale and listed it for $300 as is. I asked some questions and explained how to open the unit to remove the battery so he could test it with the power on.
He went crazy and the price jumped up to $700, then $1500. Now it's where it is.
I notice it still has parts of the original disk preload like IBM ThinkWrite, but that's not worth $20K to me.

Sitting on a piece of concrete outside, not even cleaned, is barely how you present the $20 000 collectible you're trying to sell. At least the 360PE was clean and immaculate, and had it's picture taken in stylish surroundings.

Btw, anyone know if that 360PE is still up for sale? If so, it's been out there for 2.5 years. It's not visible to me, as it doesn't ship to Norway.
