Who else also hasn't acquired a single computer in over a year?

#1 Post by pianowizard » Wed Dec 23, 2015 7:16 pm

2015 turned out to be a very special year: I didn't acquire any computers! Ever since buying my first computer in 2002, I had gotten at least two computers each year through 2014. I last bought a computer in early Dec 2014, an HP Pavilion x2 2-in-1, which was sold in Oct 2015, so now my newest computer is the Dell OptiPlex 790 USFF desktop purchased in Nov 2014. I think I didn't buy anything this past year because I am super happy with my current systems, and also there's nothing interesting in the market. As I wrote earlier today in another thread (http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 49#p772649), LCD monitors have become very interesting recently. By contrast, the only mildly tempting computers right now are the Microsoft Surface 3 and the Dell Precision 5510, but they aren't tempting enough to justify buying.

Have you also noticed a correlation between your satisfaction level and the frequency of computer purchases?

For me it is quite the opposite.

I won't be buying any new computers for awhile, used is a different story.
Nice choice on the 790 USFF, had the chance to play with a midtower and SFF. Quite lovely they were.

Indeed. Have not had a new PC in a long time. I did acquire a lovely used PC, my now beloved Lenovo ThinkPad T510, swapped a used Acer UltraBook and $70 cash for this superb laptop.

My newest computer is X220 bought 2012, I still use 10 years old self build PC as a RDP terminal. I need a refresh next year. I am waiting for the Retro project but if it fails I am going to build another desktop PC after the years because no laptop looks good anymore.

No new computers this year for me. I did buy a used synology NAS so I could self-host my notes, contacts, calendar, etc., but that's it. I'm still pretty happy with my R500 running Debian. It seems responsive enough and I like the 16:10 aspect ratio.

I've got pallets of newish computers at my office. Mainly Dell Optiplexes, HP Elite Ultra Slims that are anywhere between 2-5 years old. I don't really buy computers for my self all that often. I may upgrade systems from time to time, but in the last 5 years the only computer I have owned/purchased are my MacBook Pro 13" (2010), Custom Built Core i7 tower (2012), and my new ThinkPad T450s (2015). But I am constantly playing with different computers during the year.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I went the other way. Bought a lot of new computers. A Roku, a FreeNAS server, a workstation for myself, and a workstation for my wife. New monitors, keyboards galore. A setup that would make http://hardforum.com/ or https://voat.co/v/battlestations envious.

But I went away from laptops for the first time in a decade. Sold almost all of them (there's still an X201 with 1440 display sitting in storage that I need to get rid of). It was time to upgrade, but there is absolutely nothing on the market that interests me. Okay, to be fair, I did try to get the 1080p X250 when it came out, but in the chat with Lenovo representative, the dude actually said "lol" when I asked if I could purchase without Windows, so screw 'em.

I find it liberating to be sitting at a desk, on a mechanical keyboard, with a 30" monitor, looking into a machine composed of parts and software that I specifically researched and chose. Post-purchase rationalization? Maybe a bit, but it's also been ten months since the build, so that can't completely explain my content. Besides, what was I chasing, with all those Thinkpads over the years?

Barring some disaster, 2016 will not see a single dime spent towards computing.

I haven't purchased a new or second hand computer in 2015 but I have purchased 2 Android phones due to the fact I have 3 simcards.
This year I have spent 10 months on the road so mobility is important to me and I see this continuing into the future.

My X301 does my needs and the moment and even if they bought out a retro Thinkpad I can't see myself standing in queue to purchase one.

Actually I think it is quite exciting to see what Arm are doing with CPUs now with the release this year of the ArmV8. It has 64 bit capability and an efficient register system with enhanced cryptography features.
The most important thing is these chips don't require hulking heatsinks or fans.
I am sure Hope from 51nb or other Chinese groups will be following this technology closely. Forget the Raspberry Pi boards.

You are lucky that you can play with all these computers, for free! One of the reasons I bought so many computers between 2002 and 2014 was I just wanted to play with them. But a bigger reason was that I was never 100% happy with what I had, so I kept looking for better systems.

Sounds like you are where I was about five years ago. It took me a long time to realize that desktops suit me better than laptops. I still own four laptops, although the HP Elitebook 8740w is used exclusively by one of my students while the Dell Inspiron 7500 is just a collectable, so only two laptops (the Sony and the Panasonic) are used regularly.

Ironically, one of the things I like most about desktops is that they require less desk space than laptops. This is because I almost always put them on the floor (the abovementioned OptiPlex 790 being the only exception), and the monitor is usually pushed all the way back against the wall. On my desk at home, the keyboard is on the slide-out tray underneath the desk. Even when the keyboard is on the desk, it's smaller than most laptops.

Due to their small screens, laptops need to be placed near the front of the desk, preventing me from putting other things in that most precious area of the desk.

I always buy the big brands' (mostly Dell and HP) desktops though, as I don't have special requirements, and they are cheaper than buying individual components.

If the prices of 8TB internal HDDs drop enough this year, I may get one for my main rig (the HP 8300 Elite). But other than that, I too am not planning to spend any money on computers or computer accessories, unless something breaks.

These days I am more into trying different smartphones, and I bought five in 2015 though I kept only three. The past year I also bought four desktop monitors, which I absolutely love, especially the two 40-inchers with 3840x2160.

By mobility, did you mean your phones, or the X301? Mobility is important to me as well, but I find all phablets (defined as smartphones between ~5" and 7.0") too small. Since two months ago, my primary phone has been the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4", the international T705 model which is a full-blown tablet that also has phone functionality. With an 8.4" "phone", and a phone plan that includes unlimited data in over 120 countries, I can get so much done wherever I am. When I need Windows software and/or extensive typing while on the road, I use my 2.33-lb Sony Pro 13, which is one of the lightest 13.3" laptops around.

Also makes it really convenient when I need a computer for a specific task like a clonezilla server. Most of these computers are going to be recycled, but the newer ones we refurb and resell.

By mobility, did you mean your phones, or the X301?

Both really and I also use my phones as WIFI hotpots. I find this gives me best bandwidth when I am away from a router. But I still do most things on the X301. Looking past the X301 I can maybe see an X1 Carbon or a Yoga but I am not ready yet. Still too attached to the X301.

Assuming that tablets don't count as a "computer".....

Bought nothing for almost two years except last quarter I acquired a T530 and W530. Hate them both for reasons any enthusiast knows, so I'll stick with the 520 indefinitely, despite its ridiculously short screen
