Brag about the "good deals" that you've bought!
Re: Brag about the "good deals" that you've bought!
A couple of years ago i picked up a pretty basic HP small business machine, to use as a desktop. My desktop had died, and i didn't have a pile of cash to spend on a new computer. Anyway, i purchased it on ebay for $40 shipped. Tossed linux on it, and used it for about a year.
Sold it after the year for $200.

Recent acquisition.... a pristine x61s for $73, $89 after shipping.
1.6ghz, 2gb ram no HD.
Just threw in an Intel 330 series SSD for $80 and I'm in heaven.

Amazon had a Sandisk 64GB microSDXC Class 10 card on sale for $43.49. I had a balance on a gift card which I redeemed, bringing the final price to $36.27 shipped. It's a great upgrade for my HTC Touch Pro2.
Also got a 16GB SanDisk USB flash drive for 5 cents from Staples, thanks to a coupon. And I just ordered 3 HDMI cables from buy.com for free by redeeming my Super Points. Been a good week!

Re: Brag about the "good deals" that you've bought!
Asus X72JR: Bought it for $140USD non working and with locked bios. Replaced harddrive and removed cmos battery. Used it for a year and sold it for $425USD.
Thinkpad T42: Given to me non working when it was two weeks old. Replaced ram, still works to this day.
1982 Mercedes 190d: Bought it for a bottle of scotch, welded the exhaust and replaced the starter. Currently being used for nightly gatherings of motorsport enthusiasts. Although it did get a cosworth powertrain and puts out 372bhp.
I was also given a mint condition 1986 Saab 900 with 12000 miles on the clock for replacing the clutch on my sister's neighbour's Volvo. The elderly gentleman who owned it said he didn't want the car to waste away but he couldn't keep it. He and his wife used to do these weekend picnics together and when she died he couldn't drive a car that held so many memories. So he just locked it away. It was like a darn time capsule. It still had a newspaper with the an article of the Palme murder in the back seat. I gave it a good clean, a new battery and a proper service and it started on the second try. Purrs like a kitten.

A couple of months ago, got an R61e 15" 2GB for $70 shipped w/o HDD. I won a WD Scorpio Black used, but still under warranty for $29. Kubuntu LTS installed for free. So about ~100 for a flawless system that I gifted to my dad so he can stay in touch with the world and play Mahjongg.
Last week, I won a Nokia E6-00 for ~$140, used but in pristine condition. I was surprised nobody else even bid on it. This was the successor to the E72-E73, and came out in 2011 with a touchscreen and Gorilla Glass display. This is probably the last true Nokia smartphone and I have a protective case on the way so I can use it for the next few years.

You've had some great finds there...I'm especially envious of the 900--I do love those old beasts. A pity Saab couldn't retain its character through the GM years...had they stayed innovative, quirky, and unique, I think they'd have survived. The 99 and 900 hatches in particular were wonderful designs.DaKKS wrote:Asus X72JR: Bought it for $140USD non working and with locked bios. Replaced harddrive and removed cmos battery. Re: Brag about the "good deals" that you've bought!
Got two 760s, a 770, 770X, 310 and a 600, free, and was able to get them into working order again(with Windows installed). The 310 I ended up throwing off the roof of my house to see how strong they were(I was 14. :/ ), my friend decided to chuck the thing down at 20 ft up instead of drop it, like I hoped. The 310 didn't survive.
A T60p was advertised on ebay with No RAM, CPU, or Hard Drive. I bought it for $56 total, expecting what was advertised. After getting it in, first thing I did was take it apart to see just how terrible of a botch job the CPU-rippers did, and it looked like the machine had never been taken apart. Sure enough, a T2600 was installed. Better yet, the machine had 1 GB RAM. Popped in a 120GB HD, installed Windows 7, this thing flies!
Non-Thinkpad related:
After I retired my old Toshiba A305, I tried to find the most epic computer for around $1000, and I managed to find a Toshiba Qosmio X775, a higher-spec 3D model of the X775 with a Core i7-2670QM, 8GB of RAM and 2 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drives. The laptop also has a TruBright 1920x1080 17" screen, and a 3D webcam and 3D kit for NVIDIA 3D Vision tech(the glasses and 3D vision software). The machine also has an NVIDIA GeForce 560M-GTX graphics card.
I also got an AMD Radeon 6870 HD for $92 total, which is a pretty sweet deal.
Non-computer related:
Since you guys are bringing up cars... Dunno if this will fit in precisely, but I bought a 2004 Audi A4 after last Christmas for $6500, it isn't a Quattro... but it does have a V6, and it is fully-loaded, with a sunroof, dual power seats, HID headlights, side-airbags, and... get this: garage door opener in the sun visor, seat adjustment/mirror memory system, and buttons on the steering wheel. It's also got a CVT Transmission, which gives this 4-door V6 sedan about 30MPG highway. I have had to do a cam-belt change since I bought it, and a few other touch-ups, bringing money into the car to about $7800, but considering the value of these cars, that's still pretty good. I love this car a lot too.

Re: Brag about the "good deals" that you've bought!
I bought a 3DO Interactive Multiplayer for $5, that odd console from 1994 that never took off.
I also found official PS2/3 and Xbox (original) component cables for $2 each, they look so much better than third party
Hrm, recently I also got an Acer laptop, a custom computer in a small form factor case, and a ThinkPad 600E for free, other than cleaning the only machine that needed work was the 600E (the backlight connector had to be soldered back onto the inverter board.)
Oh, not to mention a Palm Oslo, a developer unit that's essentially a prototype of the Palm Tungsten T with a pre-release version of OS5 and a darker case color. Palm sold/leased these out to developers prior to the ARM/OS5 switch, just like Apple did with their Developer Transition Kits. They also asked for them back, so I'm not sure how many there are still out there. $15
I think that's it for now

^ Lucky bugger. The good stuff is never shipped overseas...
Dunno if this was a good deal or not for you guys, it was for me, but i scored a brand new (seriously. sealed and not a scratch) x201 Ultrabase for 57USD plus shipping. They're ~360USD over here. Picked it up from the post office today. Even got a multi dvd burner with it, not just the placeholder. On a side note, USPS has no concept of privacy, do they? Paranoid buggers...

Bought an X200 tablet 1.6 with 3gb and 160gb hdd from the bay for £100 described as spares or repair as it had a. Small white spot on the screen. No stylus , no os and broken lid catch untested battery.Thought i would take a chance in it and when it arrived it was a really clean machine in full working order and the lid catch wasn't broken and the white spot is only noticable on a light background and battery lasts about 3.5 hrs, I am well pleased for the money.
Also got a t60 14 inch 1.8ghz with 2gig ram and docking station for £3 at the boot sale. Got home and works fine.
I have owned various makes of laptops over the years and since finding the t60 i don't think i would buy any other make from now on.

Friend of mine wanted a school laptop, so I told him I'd try to get him the best possible bargain on a 14" T60:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251232478172?ss ... 1439.l2649
All he needs is something that will work all the time, has Wi-Fi and will run Windows. So he'll be really happy to see that I got him this. Even better-I also found after I picked this up that I have a spare T5600 I can plop in for some extra go-go.

A Sager NP9280 monster 17" laptop with an LGA 1366 socket, in perfect condition, that you'd normally find for $2000:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/140952454696?ss ... 1439.l2649
$350.
The random shutdown issue turned out to be the i7 CPU, it was damaged, probably from overheating. I'm planning to replace the CPU with a W3570 Xeon.

Nice find! Sucks that the faulty component was probably the most expensive one. Hope you can get it sorted with the Xeon.Medessec wrote:The random shutdown issue turned out to be the i7 CPU, it was damaged, probably from overheating. I'm planning to replace the CPU with a W3570 Xeon.
As for good deals, around Thanksgiving-time last year I found a 1985 Model M (had every keycap!) at a thrift store for $3.05. Brought it home, cleaned the keycaps in the dishwasher, good as ever!

eBay, the a31 was listed as "IBM A31 Laptop" and a seller was selling loads of x41s so got a bargain on that!fleming164 wrote:

Good tip, on eBay get to the laptops section, enter a max price then clear the search term and leave the search box blank and you'll see every affordable laptop! BTW set it to ending soonest!

The A31 listing is gone (got it in November )

5 out of 7 ThinkPads boot normaly either with internal LCDs or external VGA. The ones not booting are a T42 and a R51. Although seller stated these had no RAM, almost all in fact did have (2GB some!).
item number 300895870884
final price less than £11

15" Powerbook G4 1.67ghz, 2Gb ram, 80 gb 7200rpm drive and Leopard for 85 USD. Comes with video-out accessories and three batteries. One issue, none of the batteries work. Either they're all dead, or the PB doesn't charge them. Runs fine on the adapter though. And its in pretty decent condition.

Two oldies for 52 USD! A 755c and a 360PE (great grandfather of modern tablets), both in very good shape and 100% working condition. The 360PE pen's and hinges work perfect as well
