In the past year or so, I've had good purchase experiences with the following eBay members:

barrenenterprise (memory)
pointingmouse (trackpoint caps)
absoluteraleigh (machine)
salesatbigkey (Ultrabay HD Adaptor)
peterk987 (Ultrabay HD Adaptor)
jays_computer_parts (machine)
hoctcomputer (can't remember)
mwdusa (memory)

No bad experience to report.

I'm not really interested in bidding for a laptop right now, but I was curious about some of the listings...as an eBay novice, I've noticed that there's a lot of auction items where the bid price starts at $1 or something really low (like $20 or something)...what's the deal there?

The low bids are just to get people to start the bidding process.

If I'm not mistaken, even though the bid may start out low, on some items if the hidden reserve price (set by the seller) has not been met, then the item still isn't won. You won't know the reserve price until it has been met.

Right, but it will say "reserve not met" next to the current bid. Often sellers will start out low and not put a reserve on at all, just because they're confident the item will reach a decent price. For a lot of things there seems to be a "market value" that most auctions finish close to.

It's nice that this thread may have been reborn.
I was curious about some of the listings...as an eBay novice
There's a lot of useful information on ebay in the help center and the learning center. I'd suggest digesting that information before you jump in and start bidding on something expensive. And you should read both the information for buyers and sellers in order to have a reasonable understanding of why items may be priced in a particular way.

If you're prudent, which for me means carefully reading item descriptions, asking questions, and dealing with reputable sellers, ebay can be a great way to save money. If not, you may get to post another "I got burned on ebay" thread.

I'm looking at upgrading from my Cisco 802.11b and would like to know if anyone has this particular card in their TP. I know that I'd probably need the hack, but wanted to just find out whether this would be a wise upgrade, and know that Atheros has been mentioned favourably around here :)

That card should work just fine in your T40.

Also, the T40s aren't subject to the necessity to use the no-1802 hack as much as other T4X models in my experience.

I've upgraded all 7 of the T40s among my extended family to the Atheros a/b/g card and none of them needed to have the hack applied.

James

Well, I got the 1802 error when I popped the Atheros card in, so furiously looking about to get the info I need to fix it...

10 mins later: Applied hack via a no-1802 bootbale CD - looks like it orked fine and now I can put the screws back in :D

My 2 cents...

#72 Post by RoxyRose » Thu Jun 22, 2006 7:34 pm

I just bought my X24 from laptopsandmoredotnet2 . Their website is laptopsandmore.net It shipped very fast and was in very good cosmetic condition. I got it for $170 + $25 shipping. It didn't have a drive or caddy and the screen starts up pink (impending ccfl failure) but it has been solid and dependable ever since I started using it. I ironically like it more than the X31 I had for a short while. With a $30 shipped 40gb 5400rpm drive, it is a speedy little beast. I may get more ram (it shipped with 384mb) but having a 1.13ghz processor for that price makes it seem all worth while. I'm bummed out the warranty ended in March but it is in such great condition...I'm very pleased.

dsigma6 recommends staying away from the following ebay seller:

midwesttechrecyclers

i emailed the seller questioning why they described a thinkpad with 6-10 white blotches on the screen, as well as 2 seperate cracks in the case as "like new condition."

they responded by telling me to bug off and that they would "BLOCK" me from ever bidding on their items. i liked the emphasis on blocking me, and the complete lack of respect and professionalism.

@dsigma6: Were you nice in your emailed question to them? Were you using the same level of sarcasm that you normally use when you ask a seller about an item that might be ridiculous? I think that you have posted some of those questions here in the past. Some of them seemed to be meant to tick off the seller, and I know that you like to push the ticket a little. If that was the case, then maybe he was responding accordingly. If you asked a straightout question and got this response, then I too would avoid that seller.

I know better than anyone that I'm no stranger to sarcasm, but I really didn't provoke them-

I said- "You would swear it looked new, but it has 6-10 pressure marks and multiple cracks?"

They replied- "Yes looks new other then the mentioned items. So dont buy the item if you dont like it...... better yet ive made it easy for you and added you to our BLOCKED bidders list. Now you can go bother someone else."

That's all that was said. I followed questioning their professionalism (which as we know isn't a requirement of success on ebay). I'll drop this one, but just a mean spirited person I'd hate to have an issue with after buying something.

Yeah, their response leaves little to be desired. I'll add them to my blocked buyers list.

I happened to buy a wifi card for my X40 from linknergy:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=007

Purchased: 21st July 2006.

Received: Never

I just emailed him and he first replied that he 'forgot' since he was moving. Then he sends me a refund even after I explicitly state that I am still after the item! (Which also cost me some $$ due to currency conversion fees) He now claims that he clearly remembers sending the item so it now must be lost. He didn't send me any notification that he sent the item either.

I would stay away from this seller.

Hmm... slightly different story from the three times I've purchased some Mini PCI Broadcom cards and several antennas from him in April and June of this year. I had bought four antennas but he only shipped three. I think he may have mixed up the orders since I saw that somebody else had purchased three at about the same time I bought my four. Anyway, I emailed him and told him that I only received three and that I wanted him to hold off on sending the fourth one since I was planning to buy some more antennas from him. He acknowledged that and when I bought one more a week later he sent me the two. I didn't get the feeling that he was trying to pull one over on me, and that he was fairly easy to work with. Also, for each order that was shipped I received an e-mail confirmation that it was on its way. Now, being that I'm in California and he's in Texas, maybe that doesn't have any bearing on your situation, but that's been my experience with that particular seller.

For reference, these are the item numbers in question:

8781660125 (Broadcom cards)
6887447457 (antennas)

If you check the Purchases link in those auctions you will see my orders (eBay ID same as what I use here).

Here's my little soap opera so far with the eBay seller an46so51

Purchased a "tested and working" Hitachi Travelstar IC25N060ATMR04-0 (60GB 4200rpm) disk drive for $42.07 shipped on 10/9/06. Received the drive 10/12 in the "book-sized" USPS Priority box. Opened the box and the first thing I noticed is that the drive is encased in bubble wrap. What's wrong with that? Well, the bubble wrap was wrapped around the drive a couple of times, but loose enough that the drive was able to shift totally from one side of the box to the other. In fact, the drive was touching one end of the cardboard box when I opened it (i.e. there was no bubble wrap between the drive and the box at the ends).

I notified the seller within 5 minutes of opening the box and told her (Sofia) about the packing job and said I was running the drive under PC Doctor diags. This was 11:50pm. I began to notice that the Linear Verify test was getting bogged down; it would quickly scan through many sectors and then stop, and then slowly increment, and then quickly scan again. Some ECC errors began to appear at just 1% of the total sectors. After a little bit over an hour (1am now) and only 17% into the scan I stopped it. I wrote out the multiple errors into a log file on diskette so I could e-mail those results. I again e-mailed the seller and explained how I was testing the drive and provided the error log. I said that I would format the drive and try again later and also asked for any advice. This was the response:

"Hi, Yes. Why don't you just try to use it with installing your OS? The more testing you do with these used drives, the more chance to damage the drive."

She also said that I could send the drive back and if validated as a bad drive, receive a refund. To her credit, that reply came back within 10 minutes, but I had already shut the laptop off and gone to bed. Later that morning I formatted the drive using PC Doctor and re-ran the Linear Verify test. Still the same errors. I went to e-mail her and then read her message from earlier that morning. I said that I was returning the drive after another scan came back with errors and that I was "taking your advice of not doing any more testing".

Later that night, this came in from her:

"I will be waiting for the hard drive, but the PC Doctor is not for testing hard drives. So you may just want to use your next hard drive, instead of try to test it."

If you haven't looked at my profile, or read my lenghty posts (like this one!), you should know that I'm a TEST engineer. Telling me not to do my job just irks me :) . This was my reply:

"PC Doctor is the diagnostic software that is supplied by IBM for use with most of their recent Thinkpad laptops. I would say that since one of the diagnostic tests is specifically for the hard drive controller and the hard drive itself, it is perfectly valid to rely on the results of those tests. What program or software are you using to determine if the hard drives you are selling are good?"

And as I was composing this post, her reply came back (she appears to be a late-night owl like me):

"We are using the specific hard drives manufacturer own utilities, or pro hard drive work stations."

Seeing how this really didn't directly answer my question, I Yahoo'ed "hgst diagnostic" and found Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test software. I guess I'll have to download it and try it out on another IC25 drive that I should have laying around here (her drive is already on its way back). So, being the inquisitive type, this was sent to her just a few minutes ago:

"So, are you using ver 4.08 of HGST Drive Fitness Test (DFT) for this Hitachi drive? If not, which program are you using. What type of computer are you using with these drives and software?"

I will continue to persue this line of questioning with her until I can get some concrete information, so there may be more to this story later on.

I have yet to pass final judgement on this particular eBay seller, an46so51, but for now I am leaning toward NOT recommended.

(edit: 10/17 Received refund (less shipping BOTH ways, so now I'm out $14) for the drive with no explanation, apology, or any communication. No reply has been received to my last email about the HGST DFT utility as well. So, at this time, even though I left positive feedback on eBay for this transaction, I cannot recommend this seller. Be aware that they also sell drives "for parts". This IS fully disclosed in those auctions. They DO appear to list serial numbers in all of the descriptions so you know you are getting the drive that is being described. However, the "quality control" may need to be improved as I apparently received one of those drives they say "take too long to test".)

The luck on you Ray...I think you're going to win the battle of the minds, they're clearly giving you the run-around, but they didn't think you were smarter than them. Report back with refund status!

If the Second Chance offer came by way of your eBay-registered e-mail only, then it's a scam. A valid Second Chance offer will also appear in your eBay Messages folder. In two recent auctions I got fake SC offers (even when the seller stated they DON'T offer it). I tried to string the first one along, but he hasn't responded back to my initial e-mail. I also reported both hotmail e-mail accounts so maybe they yanked them.

I also attempted to sring a "second chance offer" ater I read your post :) and attempted to string him as well > reported.

This one came in under my ebay folder so maybe he was bidjacking with a friend or additional account. It will be an expensive lesson learned if I commit to the second offer. Decisions decisions ....what ever I do I will gladly express my experiences here for the entertainment. :)

Based upon some answers to several questions I had about one of their auctions, I do not recommend this eBay seller:

auction-partner

Currently they have a 99.4% feedback rating which seems okay, but with feedback score of 18183, that means 102 negatives, half of those occuring in the last year.

So that the reader has a better understanding of my opinion, these were the questions and answers (and where needed, my comments and/or reasons for asking) concerning this auction:

==========
IBM Thinkpad T23 PIII 1.13Ghz 1GB 14.1 DVD Laptop

Overall Physical Condition: Great - Used, but little sign of use
Notes: In good condition. Turns on and operates as intended. It passes all the self tests. Boot up on CD Rom Diags. No Hard Drive or Caddy.
==========

Q1) "I noticed that there appears to be a security label covering the MiniPCI door. Do you guarantee that the ethernet and wireless cards are inside and operational?" (A picture was taken of the bottom side of the laptop showing what appeared to be a label across the access panel to the MiniPCI area. Another picture of the results of the system information showed "no network detected". Nowhere in the auction description mentions the possibility of missing components.)
A1) "We do not test network side of laptops. No guarantees. Sold As-Listed."

Q2) "The LCD is rated as excellent. Is there any reddish tint on power-up? Any obvious stuck/dead pixels?"
A2) "See pictures for answer" (Two pictures showing a powered-up screen were both of the system information screen, which is mainly blue. It is not apparent to me if the several white specks on the screen are stuck bits or dirt on the screen. And of course if the screen has been on for several minutes, it won't show red.)

Q3) "Any idea if the system can successfully boot off of a known good hard drive? If it is found that the laptop cannot boot an operating system, would that be a cause for a return and full refund (as your description for this item does not say AS-IS, PARTS/FIX, UNTESTED)?"
A3) "You're on your own on adding a hard drive. We do not test the functionality of adding a hard drive. We can not answer if it'll load with an OS.

The moment you modify this system, it is sold AS-IS. We only cover DOA for 5 days. If you add/remove any hardware not specifically listed in the auction or remove the security stickers at any time, you have voided the 5-Day DOA and you can not return it."
(What that basically says to me is that if I try to add in a hard drive and find that the system doesn't recognize it or boot, I then cannot return the system as I would have violated their DOA rules. Even though their description says "Turns on and operates as intended".)

Q4) "What is the condition of the case/plastics? Any cracks, chips, holes, missing pieces, missing screws, looseness, etc.)?"
A4) "All laptops we sell are used. They aren't going to be in pristine condition. They will show signs of wear. Unless the tech specific noted or saw any glaring cosmetic problems, it's basically what you see in the pictures. We're not going to take the time to write down every single cosmetic problem or missing screws as we have over 1000 auctions to list a week so we can't take the time to spend 1 hour on a laptop.

All the info we know about the laptop is listed in the auction."

I guess I should have expected this when their auction rules takes up at least four times the amount of space on their page than the actual equipment details. Also, the information about their return procedures and policies are LINKS that you must notice and then click on.

Please note that I have NOT made any purchases from this seller. This non-recommendation is based totally upon the answers that I received and a review of their past feedback history.

BTW: It's been mentioned a couple of times here in the forums, but this site is great for digging through feedback on eBay sellers:

http://www.toolhaus.org/

Enter the seller's eBay ID in the Negative/Neutral feedback box, click the "Received by" button and watch as only the negative and neutral feedback comments roll in.
