Empty Battery Pack - Safe?
Empty Battery Pack - Safe?
So, I decided to pop out the li-ion cells of a battery pack, because it was dead, and glue it back together so at least I would have a filler for the bottom of my machine that didn't add any weight.
When I plug it in and plug the AC plug in, the battery led blinks..
I'm thinking that I should have severed the connectors to the little circuit board.. I could do that, but I don't want to make the case look very ugly. I have another pack I could take apart, I suppose.. But as it stands now, the battery pack with no cells in it, is it safe?

Re: Empty Battery Pack - Safe?
I would suppose that it's safer than having dead cells in a pack that no longer charges. As long as the leads inside the battery pack were removed, insulated or secured (in other words, no chance of them coming in contact with either other or any other electronics), then I don't see any problem other than having that blinking LED.

Hmm.. alright. They are all secured, and not touching anything else. As in, there are no shorts in there.
Going to soak the bat-pack in a bowl of nail polish remover to get the glue off. So stupid, I should have tried it BEFORE I glued it. I'm going to sever the little circuit that goes to the circuit board.. EG, just cut the orange plastic shown here http://www.milnoc.com/images/li-ion07.JPG

If I was going to do something like this, I'd unsolder the flexible circuit board from the battery connector as shown in this photo: http://www.milnoc.com/images/li-ion01.JPG
No electrical contact to anything in the battery pack would look like a totally missing battery from the laptop's standpoint.

Re: Empty Battery Pack - Safe?
Yeah, but then I don't think it would fit snugly into the laptop. Which is why instead of breaking the connection there, I'd do it further down the line
