PC110 Replacement TFT

#1 Post by solidpro » Thu Feb 08, 2024 9:30 am

Hi Everyone

I only heard about this through the grapevine so thought I'd repost the info here. I've got a few PC110 machines and I've never seen one in the flesh
with an original working screen.
For those unfamiliar, almost every one you'll ever find has suffered from:

- Vinegar Syndrome screen rot - the two polarising layers inside the LCD are stuck down with glue that rots in the humid Japanese climate,
crack and fail.
- The side of the LCD has several tiny electrolytic capacitors which leak and corrode the surroundings.

As well as:

- Leaking main and hibernation batteries, corrode lots of parts around them.
- The thin ribbon connector from the keyboard and other bits is very difficult to move around and often becomes brittle and splits.

Anyway, over the years I have managed to restore a few, including get the LCDs working again but I've never been able to get decent
picture/colour representation due to not ever finding a polarising film that works properly with the LCD.
Also, the LCD is DSTN-type and is pretty rubbish anyway.

So, the point I'm coming to is that a bunch of clever people have made a complete TFT replacement, which comes with a new front panel
(because the TFT screen is a different size).
I've ordered a few - they're not cheap but do seem an amazing solution to most of the unsolvable issues with the PC110 and clearly a lot of time has gone into this.
