701c screen distortion- gpu or screen failure??

I have a 701c that was working fine previously, however recently when I try to boot it up it has these weird black and white patterns over the screen. I hear the hdd working and the power lights all turn on but since there is no vga output I can't see if it's working or not. I don't know if I can add an image now but if it would be helpful I can try later. The thinkpad looks like the backlight is on but the lid displays a thick white line on the middle of 2 giant black boxes in the top and bottom half of the screen as well as a white bar with a black line at the bottom

Looks like a bad screen or cable to me. It can be hard to tell though.
