TP240X and booting from USB CD-ROM. Any CD-ROM or just IBM?

Hello,

simple question. I want to be able to have my TP 240X "boot" from CD.
I know it is possible to "start" (i.e. boot) the original recovery CD's when an IBM USB CD-ROM is attached and the TP 240X is booted from a diskette with the appropriate software installed on it.

My questions are:

1. does this process only work with the original IBM USB CD-ROM or will this also work with any other "no name" USB CD-ROM player?

2. can other bootable CD's (other then the recovery CD's) be booted this way?

my GUESS is:

IF the 240X recognizes the CD drive as one of a very few you're ok..
otherwise i think you might have a problem..

2. yes, if # 1. works out..

Hi,

I am using a PCMCIA Portable Drive Bay, and the floppies from IBM site that includes the DOS drivers for the PDB and works OK.

You can boot with any win98 floppy, but you need to find the DOS drivers for the PCMCIA ( or USB I guess) CD ROM you like to use, and this is not usually easy, but worth trying.

Cheers!!

Thanks for the replies. I took my chances today and bought, for a couple of euro's, a new no name USB CD-ROM drive with the same specs as the IBM USB CD-ROM drive (24-speed, USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 compatible).
As soon as it has arrived and I have tested it, I will let you know the results.

Well, the CD-ROM player finally arrived.
I created a USB recovery diskette, put in a Win2000 Pro CD in the player and booted from the diskette.
The CD-player is not recognized, booting failed therefor.
Under Windows 2000 Pro the CD-player works fine.
So it's till very usable for installing applications, drivers etc that come on CD.

How can I start the c.d rom drive when the icon is missing? I'm trying to install new Norton software and there is no icon in my computer or anywhere to start the darn disc. The c.d rom drive is still listed in the device manager but no way to launch it. Help

I seem to remember that a CD or DVD booted through the USB is no good with any flavor of 240. The USB drivers don't load until Windows loads, so USB can't work as a boot device. The only CD drive that will boot is one that connects through the PCMCIAslot.
This and other reasons is why I opted for the X40.
