How do I fix my 760XD keyboard?
How do I fix my 760XD keyboard?
760 & 765 keyboards are well known to stiffen. If this is such a well known problem, there should be a well known repair, but I can't find it. How do I fix it? What causes this problem?
This is my favorite ThinkPad, and I can't use it at all. Please Help!

What do you mean by 'stiffen'? That the keys are hard to press?

Yes.
Yes.
Re: How do I fix my 760XD keyboard?
What I would do is to remove the keyboard and soak it in Isopropyl alcohol for a day. Then rinse it in a distilled water bath, then let it dry in a warm dry spot for a few days.
Re: How do I fix my 760XD keyboard?
Just a FYI, when Harry says "Isopropyl alcohol", he means 99% pure isopropyl, not rubbing alcohol like you might have in your medicine cabinet. Rubbing alcohol has a lot of oils that would cling to the keyboard, attract and hold gunk.

Re: How do I fix my 760XD keyboard?
Has this been tried before? It seems like soaking in alcohol - especially that strong and for that long - would melt the plastic. I've seen and heard of other chemicals doing the same thing in a lot less time.
Re: How do I fix my 760XD keyboard?
Alcohol isn't really a solvent. It's an astringent that drives out moisture. At least that's more what the pure stuff is anyway.

Re: How do I fix my 760XD keyboard?
I was probably thinking of another alcohol, the kind used for nail polish remover. It does melt plastic.
Any Idea where I can get pure isopropyl? I'll check one local drug store that has chemicals, but if they don't, where can I order some?
