Would my IBM ThinkPad 240 be considered a netbook?

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
I wouldn't quite consider it a netbook, but it certainly is an early super-mobile laptop, similar to the now X-series. Worth keeping.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

Please excuse my inexcusable ignorance, but what is a "netbook"?

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
A netbook is really a very small laptop that is just used for internet surfing only. with a small 10" - 12" LCD displays. they have no built in Drives such as a CD-ROM Drive, 99% netbooks come with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition on them with a 1GB Max RAM, Intel Atom Processor and a SSD drive "Solid State Drive" most also have a built-in webcam on the display. Heres a link with the lenovo IdeaPad netbook compared to the ThinkPad W700 laptop. http://www.geek.com/wp-content/uploads/ ... 700_06.jpg

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
Ok, that's it, I want a 240.
Although to answer your question, many consider the 240 to be a laptop notebook, but not quite a netbook, for, despite it's size, it is very much capable for basic multitasking and professional work(for it's time.)

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
Bottom image(http://www.nacbook.com/fotos/240E.jpg) is probably the best.
Dang the 240 is small, must have also been one of the last few Thinkpads to carry the numerical label before the X-series was introduced.
But the 240 and the X-series are considered laptops for they're built to handle the work and tasks professionals perform, the reason they're so small is simply for increased mobility.

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
I saw a 240 the other day. I popped into my local computer repair shop and my buddy that owns the place pulled it out and asked me if I wanted to buy it for $100.00. I told him that I would like to research it online first. It looks like at best it has a 366mhz processor and wont take very much ram. If it had been at least the equal to my X22, I would have bought it in a heartbeat. It was in very good condition and even smaller than my little X22. Neat little laptop in deed.

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
The 240's hardware isn't very powerful by today's standards, so it most certainly couldn't be used for work or regular use with today's software. But with a bit of searching, I've been able to find a few with Pentium IIIs hitting over 500MHz, perfectly fine for running XP SP3, and some people have been able to shove 320 MB RAM into the wee little laptop provided a BIOS update was done. So, for it's size, some could pack a punch.
It is a great little gadget to have in your Thinkpad colletion, mostly because it's one of the smallest of the Thinkpads I know of. Plus, it's the only one of the 200-series produced, with the exception of the 235 made and sold in Japan. Don't know much about that one.

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
I had an S30 briefly and would *not* want to have another one because while it looks great in photos, it looked kind of gross in real life IMO, especially the ugly battery. On the other hand, the 240Z is probably my all-time favorite Thinkpad. The most important feature that distinguishes the 240Z from the 240 and the 240X is that it has 1024x768 resolution, versus only 800x600 for the 240/240X and 1024x576 or 1024x600 for the vast majority of today's netbooks. For me, 800x600 is useless, and 1024x600 is not much better. If I recall correctly, the best (and rarest) 240Z configuration included 600MHz PIII and a built-in ethernet port. Mine has a dummy ethernet port (which I suppose can be made to work if I put in a miniPCI ethernet card) and only has 500MHz PIII, but it was still quite expensive -- I paid $239 for it back in Dec 2008.ajkula66 wrote:Most of us wouldn't mind owning a S30 or S31, or for that fact 240Z, but these are VERY rare and therefore quite expensive...

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
240Zs are that rare? Hmmm...
I suppose having one in your collection would be worth it, but you'd have to be financially situated before getting one. That's the thing about collections, you never know if a rarity will pop up, and make itself available to you at a fair price. But most of the time, the really interesting items are the ones with outrageous prices for their usability.
I like being surrounded with Win 98 machines anyway, especially when they're not tied down(desktops or laptops with dead batteries)

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
There are a couple of 240's on eBay now. I want one too and wouldn't tell you about them, but my budget's already stretched. So go get them now, and in a few weeks, I won't need too bid against you on the next one.
Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
Back in the day I had a 240 (Celeron 450 w/320M ram) and a 240X (PIII w/192M ram). Both could handle XP SP3 but the 240X was a little faster. I put wireless cards in both. The problems with the lack of a booting cd except a PCMCIA version, USB 1.1, 800X600 screen resolution on a so so screen and the weird hard drive caddy drove me to an X40 and an X41. They are only 1/2" wider and taller, but they are thinner and lighter and are way more modern in all respects, plus used ones are dirt cheap. I don't have a problem with the proprietary 1.8" drives which are more than adequate for XP, Linux and Windows 7,

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
Does anyone know what the Max RAM for the non X/Z ThinkPad 240 is, as mine just says 240? I here its 192MB or 320MB.
If its any of those 2 can it be upgraded to 512MB or even a 1GB at the max.
Also would a MiniPCI WiFi card work in this as I heard you can upgrade the ThinkPad 570 modem MiniPCI to a WiFi card.

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
The Thinkpads, out of the box, can handle up to 192 MB, but with a BIOS update can handle up to 320, no more. This goes for all 240s, as I recall.

It looks like the 240 and S30 are the same size. look at the picture link on this topic page.

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
I will agree the S30 does not look like all the other sleek square thinkpads. But when you actually hold one, you will apprectiate the solid build and 'metal' feel (weight?) compared to the much more squishy and plasticly 240 models (they are much like a larger version of the 570). The keyboard on the S30 is allowed to be bigger on account of the funny wings on the side a fair trade-off i think, and kinda gives a nod (albeit small) to the 701 heritageBookworm wrote:> I had an S30 briefly and would *not* want to have another one because while it looks

A comparison to the modern netbooks is not really fair, as i think the S30 entry point was much higher thereby making it possible to up the build quality and small details. For example the weird bar/foot behind the screen that folds down when opening the screen - must have cost a fortune to design and produce compared to a square lid.
For a more notebook like machine check out the even smaller model 220...

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
Ah. I was wondering what the two on the top far right were...
As I recall the 240 is one of the smallest of the Thinkpads ever made, although I haven't seen an S30 so I can't really tell. I think someone needs to post the dimensions of both here in inches...

Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
A small bit of information found on Wikipedia.org
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ThinkPad
ThinkPad 240
The ultraportable ThinkPad 240 (X, Z) started with an Intel Celeron and went up to the 600 MHz Intel Pentium III. The RAM was expandable to 320 MB max with a BIOS update. With a 10.4-inch (260 mm) screen and an 18 mm key pitch (A standard key pitch is 19mm). They were also one of the first ThinkPad series to contain a built-in Mini PCI card slot (form factor 3b). The 240s have no optical drives and an external floppy drive. An optional extended battery sticks out the bottom like a bar and props up the back of the laptop. Weighing in at 2.9 pounds (1.3 kg) these were the smallest and lightest ThinkPads ever made.

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
Does anyone know where I can find a ThinkPad 240 Hard Drive connector? Seems that only my ThinkPad 240 and i1200 use a Hard Drive Adapter.
Also Will a WiFi card work in the 240's Modem slot, So my ThinkPad 240 can have built in WiFi and be somewhat a real netbook.

Hi,
- Yes a minipci will work. I am using an Intel PRO/wireless2915abg and works OK in my 24x with 256MB memory
- HDD adapters difficult to find even in ebay. One option is to use a high speed (>266x) with an adapter as indicated in this forum. Please look at http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 12#p518712
Cheers

Re: IBM ThinkPad 240
My 560X is currently using a EIDE CF adapter and its okay but may need a bit more boost. its a 16GB CF I heard there are some diffrent CF speed types of these cards. Also is there a 40GB CF not going to put much on my 240, just XP updates and lenovo updates, as its just used as a netbook type now and just using for internet.
