My understanding is that there's really no "standard" when it comes to selecting master, slave and cable select options on hard drives. Each HD manufacturer has their own system of designating those jumper positions and could very well differ from model to model. Usually those options will be printed on the drive's label. If not, then perhaps Googling the drive model number, along with "jumper selection", will lead you to a site which documents those settings.

rkawakami is correct here. Each make will have a different way of setting slave/master. Check with the manufacturers website for help here.

but the manufacturer site does not say which pin is in or out. (hence the pin 47 or 48 problem.. but I don't want to bend two of them) they just say put the jumper in for Master..

Who is the drive manufacturer and what is the exact model number?
There should be no bending of pins involved. The jumper essentially fits over two adjacent pins and provides the electrical connection needed to tie them together. Neither should there be a designation of "in" or "out" for the pin(s). The only thing to figure out is where the jumper belongs (or not) if you want to define the drive as master, slave or cable select (CS or CSEL).

This is what a jumper looks like (enlarged!): http://www.advancetec.co.uk/acatalog/ha ... _set_s.jpg
It fits over 2 adjacent pins.
