I finally ran System File Checker, using the tactic of holding Shift key down while commanding Power|Restart.
(Problem has been that Windrows demands Administrator privileges but does not respect that your user profile already includes that.
Some advice is to find the eecutable and right-click to get Run As Administrator command. But there are several instances, perhaps WOW64 directory has the one but none I tried did anything.)
You have to thread through a mess of menus until you find Safe Mode.
From which you can use Search box to find cmd then run sfc.
I just use sfc /runnow which finds and fixes problems.
Otherwise one of the ? commands should work (in Windrows sometimes syntax is 'commandname ?', other times 'commandname /? to get menu). The slash is opposite slant to normal Windrows convention.
(The command line dialogue will show current directory, I always command cd\ to get to root of C:/

Re: Doing System File Check on T480 Windows 10
Ran System File Checker yesterday but had to dodge a brick.
Used 'Safe Mode with Command Line'.
On Resume went to dark screen with cursor pointer visible and moved by red stick.
After a couple of cold reboots it started normally but very slow.
Some of that time was security checking software.
I did not realize that Windrows 10 Pro was updating itself before I ran SFC (on opening browser Windrows Udge said it had been updated, it is really Chrome with a Redmond skin).

Re: Doing System File Check on T480 Windows 10
Quick guide:
Use Windows power-Restart with Shift held down
Troubleshoot|Advanced|Start-up Settings|Restart
Various boot options displayed IF Restart again
Eventually get list with Safe mode and Safe Mode w/command line options
Enter number of desired function.
