Does Middleton allow changing Fan Profile?
Does Middleton allow changing Fan Profile?
Hi
Anyone has a T440P with Middleton BIOS...does the M. BIOS allow you to change the Fan profile?
By fan profile, I mean a temperature setting that determine when the Fan speed go from 0 to 1. My Fan stays at speed 0 until 50 deg.
Thanks!!!
p.s. I know about TPFanControl. But it does not work in other OS like OpenBSD, Plan9, etc. And letting BIOS control the fan is better.

Re: Does Middleton allow changing Fan Profile?
Middleton's modded BIOS exists only for the T61, R61, X61, and X300 AFAIK-- all of which used the Intel 965 chipset.
I've never heard of a modded Thinkpad BIOS that has customizable fan control profiles.

I saw an old Youtube video titled "ThinkPad T440P Unlock BIOS Advanced menus". The guy showed this modded BIOS revealed a hidden menu called Advanced. In the video, I saw there is a submenu labeled "Thermal Configuration." I like to know if this would allow me to change the fan profile.

The problem with those modified BIOSes is that all the hidden menus and options are shown, even the ones that either:
* don't work, or
* brick the laptop when certain settings are changed
By "brick", I mean "no display, no error beep" with the only way to fix it is to flash the BIOS chip externally.
I only flashed the unlocked BIOS on my X220 to remove the WiFi whitelist and max out the RAM speed.

Yes, the Youtuber flashed the BIOS with a "CH341a external programmer" and a clip.
I really want a more aggressive fan. I live in a hot climate with no air conditioning.
Does anyone know if is it possible to find the original BIOS from the factory (I mean, version 1.0)?
The reason I may want to flash version 1.0 is because I read that the first batch of T440Ps had very aggressive fan profile,
but users were not happy about the noise from the fan. So later T440Ps were quiet. I suspect Lenovo must be adjusted the fan profile in the BIOS updates, to appease unhappy customers.

If you have integrated graphics, get the discrete graphics fan.
Replace thermal paste with Honeywell PTM7950 thermal pads.

With the CPU running at 100% for over 10 minutes (Cinebench test), my CPU temp is steady around 72-deg. But, the left palm rest stays very cool!!!
I can feel hot air being blown out by the fan.
However, with light load (running only Edge Browser with 1 tab surfing this forum ), my CPU temp is between 50-55 deg, but the left palm rest would get warm. Because the fan does not turn on at this temperature.
Hence, I think the BIOS/EC fan profile is the problem.
Re: Does Middleton allow changing Fan Profile?
Just want to report that I just tried PTM7950, and it did not improve the thermal performance. It actually feels a little bit worse than thermal paste during light load.RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Wed Oct 04, 2023 6:04 amIf you have integrated graphics, get the discrete graphics fan.

Re: Does Middleton allow changing Fan Profile?
How did your PTM7950 arrive, with blue or clear protective film?
Was it 0.20mm or 0.25mm thick?
If blue, it was fake!
If 0.20mm, it was fake!
See e.g. here.
