How bad was the Thunderbolt Firmware Problem

#1 Post by euless » Wed Feb 07, 2024 4:19 am

I read a few years ago, Lenovo discovered that 7,8, and 9 gen had problem with Thunderbolt firmware that can damages motherboard.

How many Thinkpads were damaged?
Was this a rare problem?
Would you buy a refurbished T480/90 Thinkpad today that has never had the firmware patch?

Thanks!

It’s a massive problem and failure pragmatically affecting the usb-c charging only models the worst.

I’d only purchase one verified not to be already bricked and I’d immediately patch it asap upon receipt.

So, automatic Windows Update won't patch the firmware? So, you have to manually patch it?

Last time i tried to patch a machine in windows i had to downgrade the PM Device driver first. Lenovo doesn’t care about QC testing new updates on these old laptops and Windows Update will just install the newest drivers without concern in they’re actually the best drivers.

It’s an entirely doable operation but I wouldn’t assume it’s already been done, unless the seller can prove it by showing the firmware version.
