Modifying EXE file name ok?

#1 Post by euless » Sat Jan 29, 2022 4:15 am

Hi

I have been using Win-10 on my t440p. I installed Vim (text editor).

I want to change vim to vi, so I don't have to type vim everytime. I changed vim.exe to vi.exe.

move c:\Program Files (x86)\Vim\vim82\vim.exe c:\Program Files (x86)\Vim\vim82\vi.exe

Is this the best way to do this? Thanks!

Nah, in Windows Explorer, just rightclick on vim.exe and change it to vi.exe, that's all.
Or copy vim.exe to somewhere else, rename it there, then move vi.exe back into the original subdir.
That way you can use both vim and vi.
Make sure there is no vi.exe anywhere else and that vim.exe is NOT in use when you make the change.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

You can do this, but then it might cause confusion for other tools that use vim.exe or for when you update the application.

The simplest way, I believe, is to create a batch file, VI.BAT, put it somewhere in the path (C:\WINDOWS maybe), and have it call VIM.EXE %* (%* stands for all commandline arguments).

From memory, NTFS supports hardlinks / symlinks. Just Google it.

Actually, there are MANY ways to skin a cat. (Disclaimer: I don't endorse skinning kitties...)
