FHD+ IGZO panel for P52?

#1 Post by sz » Tue Oct 17, 2023 4:51 pm

Has anyone put an IGZO panel with >FHD resolution?

I recently purchased a refurb with the quadro P3200, and while the FHD screen is decent, a better quality (color gamut, brightness, contrast), lower power display would be a great upgrade.

3k would be great. 4k ok. I've located replacement front + back pieces for the lid on alibaba. Suspect I can find any antennas required as well. Unsure about the webcam but haven't looked yet. Goal would be to build a complete screen replacement rather than taking apart the existing one, so if there are issues, swapping back is straightforward. Given the size of the bezels, I'd be surprised if it wasn't possible to squeeze a slightly larger display in, but I haven't gone through the service manual to check how much of that space is taken up by cables, antennas, and driver boards.

I've poked around panelook a bit for possibilities. But so far I've not found any reports of anyone upgrading the P52 with such a panel either here, on r/thinkpad, or elsewhere.

Thanks,

sz

Should be possible, as long as you have the right cable (FHD 60Hz panels use a 30 pin connector, anything above that requires 40 pin), and the LCD is the right size and uses the right mounting points. I'm not entirely sure how the LCD is mounted on the non-touch models though, and you might want to have a look at the HMM and/or disassemble it yourself to see how it is. My P52 is a 4K touch model and the LCD is glued into the bezel with a few metal brackets holding it in as well, making it really hard to swap. I believe that the forum member H-Atkinson swapped a 120Hz panel into his P52 at one point, so you might be able to get more information asking him.
