To get some Buttons working!
I installed Ubuntu Hardy and I'm amazed that everything works...almost.
The middle scroll button and the 2 back&forward keys don't work. Anyone know the driver to get to get these buttons working?

Not sure why your scroll doesn't work... are you talking about the scroll wheel (which should work right away), or the Thinkpad middle button? Because by default there's the Linux middle button behavior (for cut&paste) and then there's the Thinkpad behavior for scrolling. I usually stick with the Linux default so I'm not sure how change it, but it's been done before by other people here. Also, there is an option in Firefox (Autoscroll? under Advanced) that enables this for Firefox only, might be easier than editing xorg.conf.
The back/forward keys are a Firefox issue, in 2.0 they were mapped wrong. It was fixed in Firefox 3.0. This link is *not* a fix (it does the opposite), but it gives a hint on how to change it. It would be easier to simply upgrade to 3.0 though.

it requires a change in xorg.conf to recognize.

i did this and it works fine.
thinkwiki.org also has a lot of info on this. spend some time reading thinkwiki.org, it'll really show you all sorts of neat tips and tricks (even if most of it seems to have been written about 2-3 years ago).

This link details how to get the browser forward and back keys working in both Firefox 2 and Opera. Don't know about Firefox 3 - haven't tried it.

Here is what is in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to get the middle button working for scroll.
Code: Select all
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "on"
Option "Emulate3Timeout" "50"
Option "EmulateWheel" "on"
Option "EmulateWheelButton" "2"
EndSection

i had the same issue with the trackpoint not working on my R32 in Hardy. i reinstalled it a number of times, but one time i did follow those fairly easy instructions on changing the xorg file and it turned out great. im trying to do it again, but whats the command line so that you can edit and save the file??? (rhetorical question, i'll ask google )
i have an issue with the volume keys not working in hardy, which i recall were working fine in gutsy. i know there is the program tpb, but its ugly, and they were working natively back then. does anyone know how to get those keys recognized in hardy, if you have the solution i will request the almighty to reward you, thanks.

You would probably want to use nano or gedit to alter those files. I prefer gedit.
On my X61 the volume buttons were not working because my volume control and my audio output were not controlling the same device. Once I fiddled with the volume control to be pointing to the correct output it started working. I hadn't installed tpb.

I am using the back/forward key as hotkeys for Gnome-terminal and Firefox on my T61p running Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.01. All you have to do is to run gconf-edit, and edit the key values in /apps/metacity/global-keybindings and /apps/metacity/keybinding_commands.
