Ubuntu 10.10 on my T500 with ATI GPU
I am not getting all of my resolution anymore. I use to get the 1680 x 1050, but now only get 1440 x 1050 and lower. I have ATI discrete selected in the bios. Everything to my knowledge is up to date in updates.
ATI driver is activated.
Anyone know where to point me to fix it? TIA -Pete

What driver do you use? AMD/ATI's official fglrx of the opensource (radeon/radeonhd) one? Do you use KMS?
My T500 runs fine on 1680x1050 with the radeon kernel drm driver.
Post here your "xrandr" command output.

Thanks for responding comps.
I will try that command when I get home. All I know is that its the driver that ubuntu said I needed to install when I first set up the laptop.
Where and how did you install your driver?

Re: Ubuntu 10.10 on my T500 with ATI GPU
The driver I use came with the kernel. There was no additional install needed. It doesn't have as much performance as the official fglrx driver, but it's close and allows me to use the latest available kernel (2.6.38) instead of waiting for AMD to update their driver (which can take months).
Though I have to admit I don't use it often, I do my work on the Intel graphic chipset and switch to ATI only when re-booting to windows.
Just for the record - you have most likely that driver as well, it just isn't active and I have no idea how to do it "the clean way" on Ubuntu.
PS: Append your "lsmod" output as well.

Maybe I'll try disabling it and reactivating it too.comps wrote:"it just isn't active and I have no idea how to do it "the clean way" on Ubuntu."

Not a bad idea. That, and please post the output of 'lsmod' as comps suggested.MrPeter1985 wrote: Maybe I'll try disabling it and reactivating it too.

Re: Ubuntu 10.10 on my T500 with ATI GPU
Well removing the ATI driver gave me a nice smooth ubuntu logo at log in and a perfect flawless 1680 x 1050 that does not jump at all (no vertical tears from moving things too fast) And the ATI settings are gone.
Edit: That was weird, reactivating the ATI drivers worked. I now have the blocky ubuntu logo at startup but have the 1680 x 1050 on the ATI GPU again. ??

Congratulations. You have now had a crash course in why buggy closed-source drivers suck.
Personally I'd just use Intel graphics unless you need peak 3D performance, and deal with the buggy proprietary ATI drivers when you do.

Re: Ubuntu 10.10 on my T500 with ATI GPU
I'd do that as well, .. if only BIOS guys at Lenovo had set the default for switchable graphic to Intel instead of ATI. I do reboot more than often sometimes and an extensive heat + fan speed during system bootup (until vga-switcheroo kicks in) can really drain the battery a lot.ThinkRob wrote:Congratulations. On a related note - if anyone manage to find out the correct offset for the CMOS graphic card preference storage (the intel/ati/switchable option in BIOS), I'd be glad to have that information, so I could switch cards without a double reboot.

Re: Ubuntu 10.10 on my T500 with ATI GPU
The thing is that I prefer to keep the BIOS on dedicated, as I do play games and dislike having to switch.
But now that you bring it up. I don't play that much. So I could set it to INTEL only until I want to play something. Then I wouldn't be switching it that much.
Tim from OSGUI.com was correct when saying the ATI is no good for Linux atm. He prefers INTEL CPU and NVIDIA GPU.
Thanks both of you for helping me find the issue.
