Wow, Phazer, you got some nice deals!

I just mentioned a nice purchase of a Dell laptop in another thread, which I think should also be mentioned here. It's a Dell Inspiron 5000e that I bought on this forum. It has 850MHz PIII, 320MB PC100 RAM, 32GB 5400rpm hard drive and, what I really like, a 15.0" 1600x1200 screen. For simple stuff, it's reasonably fast, and I use it almost everyday in my office. The purchase included accessories that I don't need so I sold them and brought the final cost down to $33! (I still have a travel bezel and an extra battery, and selling them would further reduce the cost!) I spent so little money on it that I don't care if it gets stolen, so I just leave it on my desk all the time, whereas I keep my T42 and R50p in a locked drawer when they aren't in use.

I was pretty hesitant about this R40 at first. The battery didn't want to charge, the CD would not read a copied CD, (comments about that on this forum). And had read about frying a mobo by using the wrong LCD. I finally just crossed my fingers and legs and plugged it in. Right now I've got a 6gig HDD before I start looking hard for a good one, this one sounds like, "a handful of washers in a maytag". A mem swap from an HP got me 512. I gotta stop getting thinkpads, either that or start getting rid of some. I've got 8 total and 1 HP. I'm nowhere near Ray though.... :D

The Lenovo Outlet store has even cheaper T61's from time to time. A friend of mine bought three of those several months ago; I think the cheapest one was around $620 shipped. They were all new and had 1 year of warranty.

I've made sure everything before paying. Exp: Seller had the item( Asked seller to send pictures of it). Information about the item is consistent. Auction started at $600 ( I think crooks won't do it!). Payment was made by PayPal. I have his ip address and it's consistent to his stated address on eBay.

Anyway, I just got it. Very good item!

A good day for thinkpad batteries...
On my way home, I picked up (2) 9 cell genuine IBM batteries for my T41 ($35 for both) Both show health in the green, one has 9 cycles 63wh , the other almost 400 cycles 43wh.
He also had a 512mb PC4200 sodimm for $5 , so a total of $40.

Not too bad a deal.

Nicely done Zman!

I have seen some of the best deals in the Seattle area. With the generous help of another forum member I was able to pickup a T60p 15" flexview for way less than $1,000 in Everett.

Is it the economy or just being so close to Gatesville?

Brad

It is mostly the luck of the draw mainly, I think. There have certainly been a number of good deals around here lately - eg:earlier this week a T43p almost fully loaded for $350 - I did not get to it fast enough.
I lived in Denver for a long time and reaped the benifits of the high tech corridor there - many disk drive manufacturers there - I used to get up early and be able to buy the untested returns for $5 and that was when drives were still expensive.
Now, I just need to run into someone local with a set of T41 restore disks....

Yes I saw that T43p with the P M 780. Those are still very pricey CPU's. More even than they were asking for the entire ThinkPad. Went very quickly as you may imagine.

Basic port replicator for $5 at Salvation Army. Not worth much more than that anyway, but I wouldn't have bought it if I hadn't seen it. Works fine with my old X24. I guess it'll replace the full-size Dock which I no longer need, as I've got a USB CD drive now.

Well, not Thinkpad related in any way but still a pretty good deal. Recently picked up an OEM DC-4 Nokia car charger ($5.97 shipped) and OEM CA-100 Nokia USB charger ($6.00 shipped) for my 770. They usually sell for $15-20 each. :)

I bought a supposedly great condition A31p for 240€. It's got P4-M 2Ghz, 768Mb, 40Gb and all the usual stuff with it. While this is not so good deal on US standards it is here on the roof of the world (a good T23 costs 200€).

Too bad that it will take some time before I get my purchase into my own very hands..I can't wait to step in the world of Flexviews (my first such machine, ever!).

I don't know kosse, $377 US is not a bad deal here for a nice condition A31P. Enjoy the flexview.
I can add to the good deals here. Tonight I just received a brand new genuine IBM battery for my X30 for $24 shipped that I picked up on EBay. It was advertised as used..go figure. Sometimes you just get lucky. Other times ...

Thanks, I will. I did not mean to say that it would be a bad deal in US. Just not something so spectacular to come to a thread like this maybe.

You hit the bullseye. Maybe I should have waited till the fat lady sings i.e. I have the laptop in my hands before announcing my great deal. Oh, we'll see soon

Well, a lot of people might not see this as a great deal, but everyday I do. :)

In 1998 I bought a Toyota Corolla with 5,390 miles on it, 1 year old. It was a demo car driven by a Toyota district manager in New York. He had added a set of Enkei rims to the car and they really made it look kind of sporty in a 4 door kinda way...

But the bottom line is that I paid $11,695 for the car. Today it has 231k miles on it and never a single lick of trouble (knock on wood). So I think that qualifies as about the best overall deal I've ever had and I put 72 miles a day on it back and forth to work.

Not a computer, but hey, I haven't had a car payment in almost 8 years - that's a great deal. :)

Nicely done. Toyota's are good cars. It doesn't add up though. 72 miles a day X 5 days a week X 4.3 weeks per month X 10 years is about only 60% of the 231,000 miles.

That's right, I switched jobs a little over 3.5 years ago. I used to drive 104 miles round trip each day to work (although for part of that time it was only 4 days a week and 1 day a week telecommute). I also use the car for driving other than to and from work. :)

I bought an apartment (54 sqm/590 sqf in an 4 floor apartment building) 4 years ago. I paid for it 25000 euro. Now the market price is 100000+ euro. Oh, wait, that's not computer stuff.. still it's a very good deal. :B

A "good deal" is actually what got me started on Thinkpads in the first place.

2 1/2 years ago, I ran across a T30 on Craig's List. 2366-61U, 1.6 GHz, 512MB RAM, original AC adapter and battery. No hard drive or caddy. Seller claimed it worked fine. $100. He was ~3 hours away, so I opted to pay him $10 to ship it to me.

Showed up USPS a few days later. Threw in a DSLinux Live CD and it booted flawlessly. $110 shipped, plus $10 for the caddy and $25 for a refurb HD from the local repair shop and I had my first TP up and running.

And it was all downhill from there. I'm now on my 3rd TP and will never go back to the Toshibas I had before.

Lucky on two sub notebooks...
Last week, I responded to a local ad for a dead Averatec notebook, my only interest was the 80gb pata drive, also came with the recovery cd set, XP Pro COA and 2 AC adapters. $45 and it was mine. (kind of like a silver 4lb X31 with a DVD / cdrw drive) I ended up fixing it and installing a 30gb drive, it has 640mb ddr ram and is 1.4ghz. Its only remaing flaw was a dead battery.
Today I ran into another almost identical one, except one model up.
My interest was the battery, ended up with the complete notebook - minus the HD and it has a smashed screen.
Another $45 deal.
The battery was perfect, has a dothan 725, a 512 ddr 2700 sodimm, intel 2200bg mpci card, and a DVD Rewriteable Drive - unfortunatly not a slim model - looks like same as ultrabay 2000.
Not bad i think, I'll play with it for a week and sell it off to pay for some thinkpad parts.... maybe a multiburner

A TP 570 PII366, no disk or battery and a TP570E PIII500, no disk, no memory, broken screen together for 15 euros 8)

Picked 'em up yesterday and they work fine

Nice addition to my other two 570's and my Lenovo 3000-thing.
So you'll know what I did last night...

Regards,
:D

I just won a 770Z for USD $15 on eBay. Well, okay, I guess it'll probably cost me closer to USD $50 after you add the $20 shipping to Canada plus whatever extortionary fees UPS tacks on for shipping via ground. And since the 770 series are so old now, maybe it doesn't really belong here in the "good deals" thread.

But it appears in the ad to be one of the ones with the 8MB video and the 1280x1024 screens, which have never been that easy to come by. The screen is apparently functional. Not that long ago, folks were asking $75-100 just for one of that size screens. I guess I'll find out if the rest of the 'pad is actually functional or not.

If you still use the 600/770 series machines like I do, though, it is hard not to be excited by a $15 final auction price for a 770Z.

Phil.

My T41 was only $350 off of Craigslist and all i had to do was reformat the laptop. Battery isnt that good but it holds about 2 hours of charge.

My TV is a Vizio VX37L that I got for $650 off craigslist.org too. It was a great buy and works great.

My Xbox 360 Premium with Halo 3 for $275 with One Wireless Controller.

 I searched for great deals when buying electronics.
