if you all wish to make some sort of online appeal (or "petition") to lenovo by signing your real names and locations and/or some other more private information i will create a special place that will remain out of sight to both non-members of this forum and to those not signing the "petition"..

some member should take the lead and PM me..

Hello,

first of all a correction of a sentence from my previous post.
Thats why the harddrive HTS541616J9AT00 now uses the firmware HTS5416**J9AT00 and have a capacity decrease from 160 GB to 130 GB.

Now the correct meaning of the sentence:
Thats why the harddrive HTS541616J9AT00 now uses the firmware HTS541680 and have a capacity decrease from 160 GB to 130 GB.

Ok now my opinion to the post of BillMorrow.
I would support the petition to lenovo by signing the real name and location.

Yeah you are correct. Since it is using the ***80 firmware, probably when the firmware was made they put in a upper limit of 128GB.

Lets see if lenovo helps with the firmware by requesting it through a petition.

Hello BillMorrow,

the petition to lenovo is really a good idea.
But I think you have to make the petition and the reason for the petition more public to reach more people.
Is there a possibility to do so ?

Check the thread linked below for petition details. I'm open to ideas on how to make it more public. Let's carry the petition discussion over to that thread and leave this one for T43 firmware issues. Thanks.

i wonder if using the hitachi Feature Tool's "change capacity" option could reset the drive's size back to 160gb post firmware flash. (see pg17 of
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/d ... de_210.pdf for reference)

Already tried the DFT feature tool, it picks up the max value from the firmware / manfacture value. It lets you downsize it to say like 100GB, then it will let you set it back to the 128GB up again.

This tool was created so that people with older bioses, could downsize and the bios could handle the new drive.

so it won't let you specify a capacity (in gb or lba) as it shows on pg17? dang...

i see the next screen shot that comes up via the 'options' button and is prepopulated with sizes...

GLR did your hard drive also decrease from 160GB to 130GB. Is the original 160GB firmware available anywhere, or an utility to save the firmware from the hard drive.

Yes and no.

In fact I updated the firmware after having transfered all partitions from my old disk (XP system and data partitions) using a Acronis TrueImage boot CD.
So I still use a total capacity of more than 127 GB.
My partitions are respectively sized like this :
C: 30 GB
D: 6 GB
E: 113 GB
But yes, in the BIOS and all software the disk is detected as a 137 GB one.

However, I don't know if it can be related, but today my system partition ( C: ) was suddenly not recognized correctly anymore !
Could it be possible that this appeared because I tried to write a file at the end of the disk (above the 127 GB limit) ?

So now I'm also searching a way to restore the original Hitachi firmware and hope also that Lenovo will support this HDD in a near future. -> sign the petition !

It happened again yesterday evening when I tried to write some big video files at the end of the last partition of the HDD : system crash, XP not able to start (file corruption error).
Fortunately, I've just done an image of the system partition using TrueImage.
OK, then I put back my old 5K120 HDD in my T43 and restored the system partition on it.
It seems that my 5K160 is definitely broken. I found that it did sometimes some strange big click sounds, but no disk errors in the event logs.
I should perhaps also try to partition it again taking care to the new total recognized capacity.

Hello,

Owner of a T43, I bought a 7k160 (HTS541616J9AT00) drive, and got the 2010 error message.

Flashing the firmware results in a working but limited to 130Gb drive.

Because I have bought my drive less than a week, I can return the drive and get my money back.

Could someone be so kind and provide me a link to the disk's origin firmware, SB40A70H ?

Thanks in advance

I have written to Hitachi's tech support regarding getting the original firmware for this drive, here is their answer :

Quote:
Unfortunately we are not able to supply firmware for our generic 2.5" hard
drives. We do not have it . If your drive was purchased as part of a
laptop, then it will be necessary to check with the laptop manufacturer to
see if they have released any firmware updates.

So we are stuck with our 130Gb capacity ? :(

I bought a Hitachi HTS541680J9AT00 80GB PATA for my T43 1871-4AG a couple of days ago (OEM not IBM original disk).

Today i managed to eliminate the annoying 2010 error at boot time.

I did this: (WARNING: THIS IS FOR HITACHI HTS541680J9AT00 model ONLY)

1. Downloaded the IBM's firmware update cd image

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62282

2. Burned the image on a cd

3. Boot the cd on my laptop

4. Let the Update firmware UI screen to start and then pressed ESC

5. Pressed Ctrl+C (or Ctrl+Break) to terminate the batch job and get a DOS command prompt.

6. Carried-out the following commands/procedure:

1) copy SB2IA79H.BDR SB2OA79H.BDR

2) hfui1704.exe OA79H -pm SB2IA79H.bdr /F SRBA79HB.tbl

Pressed "U" while in the UI screen

waited for Fail result
got a Fail result

3) hfui1704.exe IA79H -pm SB2OA79H.bdr /F SRBA79HB.tbl

Pressed "U" while in the UI screen

waited for Success result
got a Success result.

Then reboot -> worked like a charm, the 2010 error gone away.

Just felt to post the information here as a "thanks" for the guys who guided us with the solution AND as a specific guide for the Hitachi HTS541680J9AT00 oem hard disk.

Thank you all.

I just upgraded the hard drive on my Thinkpad R52 to a new HITACHI Travelstar 5K160 160GB drive. After installing and starting the machine, I was greeted with the same 'ERROR 2010' message that others here have received with their older Thinkpad models also. But it seems like everyone has just been able to ignore the error and go about business as usual, just ignoring the message. So I did the same and partitioned it up and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP into the main partition.

Everything was going fine for about a week, and then Windows started locking up. Then when I tried to reboot, Windows would no longer boot claiming some files were corrupted. So I pulled out my copy of Spinrite, and started analyzing the drive. It found all sorts of bad clusters on the drive. Some of which it could recover, and others that is just struggled on for hours.

Does anyone know (or think) that the laptop could have done something to corrupt this drive? Or did I just get unlucky and get a bad drive? I am within my 30-day exchange/return window at Newegg where I purchased it, but I am worried now that it may happen again with a new drive too.

I've run a 5K120 with an ERROR 2010 for two years without any problem.
You shouldn't encounter any problem with an original firmware.

Okay, thanks for the feedback. I'm going to RMA this thing today.

Hello,

Same Drive, same firmware version, applied your procedure on my T43 and it works ! Thanks !

Just to be exact, the right commands are :

1) COPY SB2IA79H.BDR SB2OA79H.BDR
2) HFUI1704 OA79H -pm SB2IA79H.BDR /F SRBA79HB.TBL

GLR and dan0815,

How did you decide to use SB2IA79H.BDR? There are 3 image files available for the A79H firmware (SB1IA79H.BDR, SB2IA79H.BDR, and SBBIA79H.BDR) on the latest update CD from Lenovo (version FWHD53, released Aug 6, 2008).

Is it possible that one of the other two is the correct image for a 160GB drive? Did you experiment?

SB2IA79H.BDR is for 80GB drive. The other two - for 40GB and 60GB drives. Thus, the choice seems quite natural. I did not experiment, though.

This is very confusing to me! HTS541616J9AT00 which is a 160GB drive has been explicitly listed as a supported drive for the last three releases of Lenovo's firmware update CD (releases FWHD51, 52, and 53). Does it make sense to anyone that a "supported" 160GB drive would get a firmware image that is for a different size drive? It sure doesn't make sense to me. A call to Lenovo is in order.

It is not supported. Supported drives are those that are directly recognized by program on the CD. Some 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB (but not all) are.

Well, when I run the program on the CD, it recognizes and lists the drive, but fails to flash the firmware. Also, the ReadMe file that comes with the CD image lists HTS5416xxJ9AT00 as being supported.

Maybe my understanding of what "supported" means is faulty?

i believe the firmware flasher will only flash drives that were part of the original equipment or "option" drives purchased directly from ibm/lenovo.

as an example, i have 3 100gb/7200rpm hitachis. 2 are fru "options" drives. both are recognized and are flashable from the utility rather than through backdoor machinations. the 3rd drive came from zipzoomfly and is an oem drive. the flashing program sees it, but will not flash it because it is oem, not an ibm/lenovo fru.

the same is trues for 2 60gb/7200 rpm hitachis i own. one is flashable, the other is not. one is oem, the other is fru.

Ok, so this explains why the utility fails to flash my 160GB drive (HTS541616J9AT00) directly, but I still don't understand why the firmware image on the CD would be for the wrong size IF the drive is indeed supported.

do you know if ibm/lenovo ever sold a 160gb hitachi-sourced fru drive? or put one in a thinkpad as original equipment?

btw... the "HTS5416xxJ9AT00" designation doesn't necessarily mean that the 160gb drive is supported by the firmware update. rather, it designates a series.
from: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/5k160/5k160.htm
HTS541616J9AT00 = 160gb
HTS541612J9AT00 = 120gb
HTS541680J9AT00 = 80gb
HTS541660J9AT00 = 60gb
HTS541640J9AT00 = 40gb

since previous posts above mention firmware files for the 40, 60 and 80gb drives, i'll bet those are the only ones from the "5416" series that ibm/lenovo sourced from hitachi gst as original equipment or "options" drives.

No, I don't believe that a 160GB PATA drive was ever sold by IBM/Lenovo.

True. But since the firmware update utility listed the "series" as supported, I assumed/expected that ALL drives in the series were supported. Otherwise, my thinking went, they would list the individual model numbers for the supported drives only. Maybe I was assuming too much logic in the documentaion? :-)

On the other hand, the documentation says:

Quote:
Drives that have been detected will be listed in the upper area of the Main Menu.

A blinking mark to the left of the drive listed indicates that an update is required.

No blinking mark to the left of the drive listed indicates that the hard drive has latest firmware and there is no need to update, or the firmware update is not for valid for your drive. Remove the firmware update utility and shutdown your ThinkPad.

Interesting discussion. I just ordered a 120 gig drive for my T43. I was looking for the best price on the IBM 100 gig - which is grossly over priced - when I contacted a company in CA. The guy I spoke with got the machine type and then asked me if the tag said "Manufactured for Lenovo" or "Manufactured by Lenovo". In my case, it's FOR, not BY. He said I could save money by not buying the IBM drive [they did have them in stock at $300 plus] and get the 120, including the carrier for $90.

He then went on to explain that with older T43's that were not manufactured BY Lenovo, it's extremely rare that there was an issue with the 2010 error being talked about here.

I'm trying it and will let you know how it goes. Either way, he says he'll be more than happy to take the return if it doesn't work out.

This trick worked flawlessly for my 80GB OEM Hitachi 5K160 on a 2373 T42 (I installed it to replace the IBM-branded but more noizy and slow 100 GB Toshiba MK1032 - purchased for 250S vs 50S I paid for HTS5416). In fact, I did the firmware upgrade only for curiocity sake - after reading the previous posts on this forum. 80GB TravelStars work without any problems in my T40 and T42 ThinkPads with their generic non-IBM OA70H firmware. Hence, there is really no reason for upgrading! I do not notice any performance change after upgrading the firmware to IBM's IA79H version. The only change I see by running HD Tune Pro afterwards is that 48bit addressing is disabled in the IBM firmware. That's why the drive capacity of bigger drives is truncated to 120GB (not an issue for my 80GB drive!). The rest - HD password, HPA, AAM, active protection - all work as they worked before. Hence, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I've just updated a HTS541616J9AT00 (160G) with SB4OA70H firmware to IA79H.

- Restart, and exit update tool via ctrl c
- Typed : 1) COPY SB2IA79H.BDR SB2OA79H.BDR
2) HFUI1704 -pm OA79H SB2IA79H.BDR /F SRBA79HB.TBL
-> Typed U in the tool -> error
3) HFUI1704 -pm IA79H SB2OA79H.BDR /F SRBA79HB.TBL

- reboot -> no 2010

Hello,

Same Drive, same firmware version, applied your procedure on my T43 and it works ! Thanks !

Just to be exact, the right commands are :

1) COPY SB2IA79H.BDR SB2OA79H.BDR
2) HFUI1704 OA79H -pm SB2IA79H.BDR /F SRBA79HB.TBL
-> Typed U in the tool -> error
3) HFUI1704 IA79H -pm SB2OA79H.BDR /F SRBA79HB.TBL
-> Typed U in the tool -> PASS

I just found out about this problem a week ago ... on my 2668-G2U T43p.

So I downloaded the newest fw bood cd ISO from IBM, version 54. Having problems with it.

The firmware for the HTS721010G9AT00 on the boot cd is up to version A5DA now.

Here is what's interesting: when the CD boots up, the firmware update program properly identifies my hard drive as the IDE Primary Master, and can read the installed firmware version.

When I exit to PC-DOS and use the hfui15 command, I get the following error after pressing "U":

Quote:
There is no hard disk to update

I am using the following commands:
Code:
COPY MCZIA5DA.BDR MCZOA5DA.BDR
COPY MC4IA5DA.BDF MC4OA5DA.BDF
HFUI15 OA5DA MCZIA5DA.BDR /F MPCA5DAB.TBL
HFUI15 IA5DA MCZIA5DA.BDR /F MPCA5DAB.TBL

also, anyone know any of the differences are between the various hfui versions? Why are some 15 and some 1704 etc?

thanks, hoping someone can help here.
