Bright T60p butterflies wallpaper

#1 Post by yak » Sat Jan 31, 2009 8:27 pm

I've just finished a wallpaper for all you T60/p fans.

It is basically a mash-up of the green May 2008 calendar wallpaper from Lenovo Japan which features an X300
http://www-06.ibm.com/jp/pc/tplife/wp/98_1400x1050.jpg

with a straight press picture of T60p
http://www-06.ibm.com/jp/pc/media/think ... 4_f_lv.jpg

The wallpaper comes in SXGA+ resolution only and in two flavors.

1. With the screen filled with green pattern and more butterflies, just like the original calendar wallpaper.
http://files.arkadiusz.wahlig.googlepag ... lies-1.jpg

2. With the standard worldmap, just like the original T60p picture (with just a minor change, the /jp was removed from the URL).
http://files.arkadiusz.wahlig.googlepag ... lies-2.jpg

The calendar part was removed of course.

Hope you like it.

-- EDIT --

Added another one, with the T60p on the right. This way there's place for icons on the left.
http://files.arkadiusz.wahlig.googlepag ... lies-3.jpg

-- EDIT --

Look later in this thread for other versions, high-res wide-screen included.

You should add another ThinkPad image in the screen of that T60p and so to infinity :P IMO this model of T60p is the most beautiful ThinkPad as of now :parrot:

You mean like this?
http://files.arkadiusz.wahlig.googlepag ... lies-4.jpg

This one also has a dark gradient at the bottom of the image to make the Vista taskbar look better, in particular the Power Manager gauge which is almost invisible without the gradient.

The iterations are without the gradient of course. To make it look a bit more real, every iteration is a bit darker.

The IBM ThinkPad logo on the palm rest was also replaced by a new style ThinkPad logo.

Exactly! Great job! It looks really very cool! :thumbs-UP: I´m gonna set this as my default wallpaper for a while :)

I just set your wallpaper and it´s very pretty. Just a creative suggestion: since the black and green nuances fit very good together, you might try adding some more nuance of green to/instead of the big white parts in the upper half. This would also increase the readability of all desktop items.

Marin

EDIT: As for the ThinkPad logo, I think it would be nicer with the old IBM logo and also unified. My idea was to create that camera effect since I was going to use your wallpaper on my ThinkPad, i.e. I was going to add one more ThinkPad to the whole picture :). FYI I still have the old IBM logo on it :)

Thanks for your appreciation.

In fact, I was working on a similar thing. I've added a light blue gradient to the top to somehow cover the big white part. Here's how it could look like:
http://files.arkadiusz.wahlig.googlepag ... lies-5.jpg

I'll try with a green gradient and post back. If you have another idea, please tell me.

I'll try to do a 1920x1200 version with the upper gradient and an IBM logo if time permits. I replaced it with the ThinkPad logo for the same reason you want the old one :). I like the new one better and replaced the original IBM stickers on my T60 recently so it looks exactly like the one on the wallpaper.

As for the "white parts" I was thinking you could add some more of those flower motives, in green, maybe slightly darker green or just different green, but I´m not sure if it wouldn´t be perhaps too much of it then, which could make the wallpaper a bit too "heavy". I think this is something to try out and see if it´s good or not.

I have to agree the new stickers are also nice, but don´t you find annoying the fact that they don´t cover the whole...(I´m not sure what this is called in English) hole(?) ? :)

Indeed. Some of the Lenovo wallpapers are just impossible to use without modifications.

They do, check this picture for example:
http://ak.buy.com/buy_assets/rsschannel ... 3708/4.jpg

The black part of the whole sticker is matte, the "Tseries" writing is also black but it's glossy so it's only visible if you look closer. That makes it look good if you look closer for details but also clean when you look at it from some distance. And it emphasizes the ThinkPad brand. I like that.

But anyway, let everyone choose what they like best - luckily we can :).

Sooo, here's another approach.

Everything was redone in higher resolution. Top of the wallpaper was filled with green gradient and some butterflies. I tried to play a bit with a copy of the bottom motive but no matter what I did (resizing, cropping, rotating, changing colors), it never was different enough. I'm quite pleased with the current effect thou.

Here's a 4:3 version (1600x1200):
http://files.arkadiusz.wahlig.googlepag ... lies-6.jpg

And here's one for widescreens (1920x1200):
http://files.arkadiusz.wahlig.googlepag ... ies-6w.jpg

The contents of the T60 screen on the wide version are same as in the standard one.

Tell me what you think.

It´s definitely what I was thinking of. The missing flower theme is actually not a big deal since the space is filled with butterflies, which gives details to the upper part. I think you could darken the upper half even slightly more so that the middle white part could also become somewhat greenish. On the other hand I´m not sure about that because it may become swamp-like :D Instead of this, it would maybe better to make the colors more intensive in the upper part (without darkening if possible and without the butterflies, they are perfect the way they are right now) and thus to spread the green nuance also into the middle part, gradually, so that the middle part still remains lighter than the upper part.

Another point: you could make the colors in the ThinkPads screens lighter because the black frames of the displays give an impression (I believe it´s the optical illusion) that they are darker than the outer part. Hence it´s maybe a good idea to compensate this and also I think it would be a nice color game because the colors in the inner of the screens will look as light as the other and at the same time it will be obvious that they are slightly lighter than the outer ones (like in the optical illusion examples from the books :) ).

Well, I guess I was a bit too extensive here :)

Thanks for your efforts, the 4:3 looks really nice,

Marin

BTW, your second link doesn´t seem to work (404 error).

EDIT: It works now, thanks :)

On the 1920x1200 wallpaper the white part in the middle looks even bigger :) I would say it´s a bit too big :)

Ok, I'll see what I can do.

About the ThinkPad screen brightness... it's not an impression, they actually are darker :). I did it because without it it kind of looked as if the screen was transparent, the contents blended with the other parts of the picture because colors were the same. You've spotted this only now because they are darkened a little more than in the first one. I'll do one without it so you can tell me which one you like better.

This time a 4:3 size only. The upper gradient uses a more vivid color and is stretched more to the bottom. I also had to move some butterflies to the bottom to make them more visible, but they look even better. The screen contents aren't darkened anymore.

I've added a gentle gradient in the lower right corner. The wide version is back too. Contrast of the flower motive in both versions was increased. This is especially visible in wide version since its original contrast (as published by Lenovo) was lower then in the standard one.

I guess both with you we are late birds :parrot: :) I think the main part of the image is perfect as of now. Only two points: the part in the screens still look somewhat dark (maybe not just an optical illusion of me) (I´m not very sure about that as it´s very late now), and the lenovo brand has become somewhat green :) I would say it would better stay black, what do you think?

Yes, I like to stay awake as long as I can. Getting up in the morning is a totally different story though ;)

I spotted the greenish color of the Lenovo logo just now. I'll fix that.

Like I said, the contents of the screens aren't touched. If they still appear dark, it must be an illusion this time. I'll see how it looks if I make them lighter.

Last modifications done from bed :)

Lenovo logo is black again. The brightness of screen contents is increased by 10 points for every iteration.

Standard:
http://files.arkadiusz.wahlig.googlepag ... lies-9.jpg

Wide:
http://files.arkadiusz.wahlig.googlepag ... ies-9w.jpg

The worst thing are these iterations. I don't think it can be automatized in PS so I have to do it by hand every time :)

I can swear, yesterday night the lenovo brand name didn´t look greenish on the last two wallpapers you linked, maybe I was too tired. But now in day light they still look greenish or I´m missing something here :?

Nope, it's black. Load it into Paint (if you're on Windows) and use the color pickup tool if you like. Must be an impression because there's a lot of green color around :)

I could try making the green color that surrounds it a bit lighter so that the logo somewhat glows.

And BTW, thanks for your suggestions, I also like the end effect very much. The idea that my T60 which has this wallpaper set is just another iteration of the camera effect is cool.

BTW, I was thinking of the same thing :)

Gerne geschehen! :) I had a similar idea about the camera effect with ThinkPad(s) for a wallpaper, but unfortunately I´m not very gifted with Photoshop or similar programs...

Thank you very much for taking the efforts and time to make this beautiful wallpaper,

Glow added. I hope it's enough, definitely batter than without it.

Even if it still might not look pitch black, I think we should leave it like that. Adding too much white makes this part stand out too much from the rest of the picture.

BTW, I compared the last ones with the previous regarding the "darkness" of the Lenovo logo and the second one definitely looks better IMO. Adding more white to it would indeed only make the Lenovo logo stand out too much and artificially against the surrounding green background. One perfect ThinkPad wallpaper!

Now, when mission accomplished, I have a small idea... How about this very same pattern but in versions in red/blue/gray? I think particularly the last one would look very noble :) What do you think about this?
