Wow, where did you find *that* ?

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
The problem is I forgot it ... I have to inspect my old notes.
I remember only it was very big machine (some 12 lbs), cheap (ca 40 usd), working, with AIX something - I do not know these systems.
I left it alone, without OS/2.

Interesting .... I concentrate on collecting smaller Thinkpads. I was thinking about TP 850 only for test purposes.
But if it is so rare ...

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
the TP 850 (and its brother which i forget the designation of) were/are RS6000/power PC..
i have an 850 as well but with no HDD..
it came from boeing and they tend to grind up the HDD's..
these are 2.5 inch scsi drives and i have not been able to find one..
so if the 850 is still available and you don't want it and it DOES have the scsi HDD i want it..
i have the camera on mine too and a fellow with a factory WHITE thinkpad wanted to swap at one time..
i still have not found the 850 after my recent move but its here someplace..

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
just seeing this thread after nearly a year..!
i found the TP850..
i had not thought to sell it but rather put it near one of the two thinkpad S30's i have in my little thinkpad museum..
it would be fun to find a SCSI 2.5 inch HDD to try in it..
i have a vague recollection of having some sort of recovery CD or O/S for it someplace..

You can find 2.5 SCSI on mac DUO laptops (eg. Duo 230). I had one of them at the past (the DUO) and the
HDD was definitely 2.5 SCSI!

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
coming back to this, i find two powerbook duo's on ebay..
both working..
BUT, the problem is that there is a very proprietary cable and caddy/housing required.. while the housing can be left out the cable sure can not..

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
i have no idea what apple used in their "black box" computers but i do know the IBM scsi drive interface cable is highly unlikely to be the same..
IBM used a proprietary HDD caddy at that time for all their thinkpads..
the 850 powerpc rs6000 thinkpad requires that same caddy with the scsi cable which is not the same as the standard ide cable..
perhaps i should have swapped the camera from the 850 for the factory white thinkpad from japan.. it was something like a 700 or 720 series.. very interesting and rare here in the usa..

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
Having a working 850 and available to help if needed.
Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
2.5" SCSI HDDs should have the same pin header / it's what they plug into with special caddies that makes them unique.
OS/2 PPC is an unfinished operating system and has no ability to network.

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
i still have a few of those 750/755 series caddys and they are NOT the same as those for the SCSI drives in the power PC 850 series..
SCSI drives have had a wider header on the drive.. and the plug that mated with the thinkpad was a wide trapezoid sort of thing..
i have a LOT of the bits and parts from the old thinkpads that i really need to clean out..

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
So the 2.5" SCSI HDDs themselves have different internal connectors?BillMorrow wrote: ↑Fri Sep 22, 2017 2:26 am

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
Why don't we take a little guess according to this picture?
Yea, they have different connectors.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
No, I was referring to 2.5" SCSI *exclusively* (not other hard disk technologies; of which you're missing some like ESDI and PS/2 all-in-one hard disks). In that Bill Morrow is saying the caddies are different, which implies that there are variating 2.5" SCSI connectors--which I did not think was a thing, because I assumed all 2.5" SCSI connectors are the same.

Re: OS/2 PowerPC Edition
OT:
I have an Agfa SnapScan 1236s scanner from the year 2000, which I am still using today with great success (under W7-pro 64-bit).
It is attached to my PC via an Adaptec AIC-7850 PCI adapter card.
The connector?
25-pin Fast-SCSI which is shown here as DB25 (same as the 'old' parallel printer cable)

According to that they are mini-centronics like the 80-pin SCA on U320 hotswap drives.
Either that or maybe some use pins like 2.5" IDE disks, but the SCA connector looks to be the only one I can see, and most likely the one in the 850 and all the rest (proprietary caddies aside).
