Are you (not) having problems with email notifications?

#1 Post by rkawakami » Fri Sep 04, 2009 10:51 am

Several members have been reporting that they have not been receiving email notices for new PMs or for watched threads (subscriptions) for a couple of months now. I'd like to gather some information as to who is and who is not receiving these notices. If your "Notify me on new private messages" profile setting is checked "Yes" and you are sure that:

- the email address in your profile is current
- none of the emails coming from the forum is going into your spam folder and/or being filtered out; messages are coming from <forum owner's first name>@thinkpads.com
- you have received a PM recently (say within the past two months) and DID NOT get an email notice

then please indicate as such here in this thread. I already know about the four in this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=78669

Likewise, if you ARE getting all of the notifications for PMs then I'd like to know that as well. I'm trying to find a common link between the members who are not being notified.

Received a PM this afternoon, "Notify me on new private messages" profile setting was checked "Yes". Checked spam folder. No email notification.

In fact, the only "No" radio button selected on that page is "Hide my online status".

Investigating this problem further, I ran across this: http://www.phpbb.com/bugs/phpbb3/ticket ... t_id=46725

"...going back to version 3.0.4 of functions_messenger.php makes everything all right again." This appears to verify that the phpBB software is to blame. We are running version 3.0.5, which is the one that the OP in that thread said broke his email. There's also a bunch of email errors in the system error log here (about 300) but they stop on May 12th. I'm tempted to purge them all and see what happens.

I'm noticing this problem on other boards I participate on. Not getting topic reply notifications in several different boards. So, it seems the problem is not just here.

I changed my email address too some time ago and the system failed to send the re-activation email. I had to get help from Bill to get back on the forum!

Still not getting any email notifications, and don't want any. But, the failure to get that re-activation email was a problem that needs to be fixed.

Just received a topic subscription email earlier today, so seems to be working for me.

I've been trying to look at this from time to time... It seems to affect most people but there are some that are still getting notifications. I haven't been able to figure out why it works for some but not others. The best guess that I have is that it may be solved by rolling back to a previous version of one of the modules that makes up phpBB version 3 but that might introduce more problems and that's something that Bill M. does not want to happen.

I think I was the original complainant for this issue, so I'm going to reply here just to see if Fortune Has Smiled on Me with an Email.

I haven't received any for quite some time either. Could this be related to what I have been observing when I send PMs, and that is the messages seem to be stuck in my outbox and don't go any further. This does make it difficult to contact someone who does not have their email address visible.

However, I did receive a PM yesterday but no email notification of it.

I believe your issue with PMs is "the way it is" - they're in your outbox until the recipient actually reads the message. That's actually a nice thing, as one can delete the message at any time up to that point.

And unlike a few folks, I seem to still not be getting notifications.

Woa! I just got a couple of email notifications today! Haven't had that happen in (?) many months. Has something been changed about the board, or was this just a fluke?

I am not aware of any intentional change made that would have affected notifications being sent out.
<pause for some investigation>
However, I just checked the board version and it reports 3.03. Previously it was at 3.05 (see my second post in this thread) so that may be the reason.

Like Art and Neil, I got one a day or so ago and was startled. Not just because I thought they were broken, and not just because I've not been active here for a bit, but perhaps mostly because it was from the "Who are you on eBay?" topic that hasn't had a new message in almost a year!

I received a PM on the 23rd of Jan. 2010 and have not yet received an email notification. I have not received them for some time although I do believe email notifications worked for me when this new forum (phpBB3) first started.

Apparently the notification I received was an aberration as I haven’t received another.
