60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
What I don't understand is why the standard file systems, written with hard drives in mind, are used with flash-based storages. It would be so much better to use a flash-aware file system taking care of flash wear and erasing the empty blocks in background.

Isn't this what trim does in Windows 7?

Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
Please, about which beeps do you speak?
I have a 32GB Kingspec SSD in my X40 for two weeks and I never heard any beep and saw any warning message. Or did I misunderstand it?

Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
Those beeps are only on the X41 whereas a SATA->PATA converter is used, and only in newer BIOS releases.
Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
Thank you very much. I am preparing to downgrade Bios on my X41T.
Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
I'd just like to report that I finally got my lenovo ssd today
Installation could not of been easier
- pull out old
- change cover to new
- push in new
I was a bit worried after I read this before getting the SSD, but I'm happy to report I did not experience any problems as all with my X40.
As for the drive's performance, wow!
Boots faster then my Q6600 / CaviarBlack desktop machine.
Programs launch instantly and everything is great.
Would definitively buy again.

It would be interesting to see owner of the Lenovo/Samsung SSD run a CrystalMark and post it here.
Thanks in advance.

Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
I think Crystalmark has already been run on the Lenovo/Samsung drive. 4k random write speed (the most important number as I see it) was around 1M/sec, which means it's not one of those basically broken ultra-slow drives, but not all that impressive. The Kingspec pata drive gets around 2M/sec and the Intel X25-M (for comparison only, it won't fit in an X40) gets over 30MB/sec. And the much more expensive X25-E is even faster.

Hi Y'all,
I installed the 60GB SSD 41W0736 drive in my X41 Tablet.
I ran Crystalmark and got 1.575 on the 4K write.
If anybody is interested, I can e-mail a screenshot of my results.

great weogo!
can you run iometer? it seems that crystalmark is not very useful for anything. For instance, it rates the kingspec as excellent at 4K while it has a Jmicron and iometer gives it 7 IO/S at write 4K (vs 100 IO/S for a 4200tpm HDD).
you could even come on my topic and post
http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/viewtopi ... =3&t=79628
your SSD might be very good, but the benchmark you run are not really telling us much.
also, what do you think about the powerconsumption?
Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
I would appreciate some help. I bought one a 41W0736 on Ebay and tried to install it in my X41 (not tablet). It fit fine with the flange included, but I get a 0200 error when I turn on the thinkpad. I have tried installing it a couple of times and booting from a bootable USB with ghost on it, but I always get the 0200 error, even if I move it down the chain in the order to boot. To make sure that I was not crazy I connected the 41W0736 to a 1.8" USB enclosure and connected it to the thinkpad and later to a desktop. Neither the thinkpad no the desktop recognize the drive. Any thoughts? Thanks

Open the caddy and make sure the FPC is inserted in the SSD ZIF connector properly.
Although most SSDs are 5V tolerant, make sure your device is rated for 5V before putting them in USB housing.

Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
Thanks. It turned out that I had a bad drive, which I returned and received a new one. BIOS recognizes the new one fine, but I cannot get the X41 to boot from it. I have the new SSD in the thinkpad and have tried cloning the old drive in a 1.8" USB enclosure with Ghost and cloning from a Ghost image. I have also tried a new install of Windows XP, as well as a recovery using the thinkpad recovery disk.
When I try to boot from the new SSD, I get a flashing cursor in the upper left hand corner. Does anyone have any thoughts about what I am doing wrong? Thanks

With the new drive in the HDD slot, use fdisk to remove the old partition and make a new partition.

Thanks. That worked
Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
I just had a 41W0736 arrive from the US->UK...it is the second one actually as the first was most obviously used and damaged.
Credit to the seller who shipped another one after receiving the old one back...
Just a quick question before I try to mount it in the X41T - looking at the original HDD I see the black, plastic trim that forms part of the computer facia and secures the HDD in position is held on by two little black screws - there are also of these screws at the rear of the drive.
Looking at the replacement SSD there are no threaded holes whatsoever along the side of the device...
Also looking at the pins on the rear of the device it looks like there is a group of 4 pins missing?
This group of 4 pins is spaced away from the main group of 43 pins (there is one pin missing from the original HDD) by the width of a single pin if that makes sense...there is also some metal shrouding present on the SSD that is missing on the original HDD.
Difficult to describe without pictures but for those of you who have trodden this path already you should know what I mean!
Have I got the correct part?

Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
Yes, without the two screws at the rear end of the SSD adapter, the HDD slot cover is less secure, but it should be ok.
The missing 4 pins are not used in X40/X41/X41t. So it should work properly without them.
The SSD inside uses ZIF connector. The metal cover is just to enclose the SSD and adapter cable in a more secure way.

Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
Thanks for the reply sjthinkpader,
My observations above were based on comparing the original HDD vs. the new SSD and it just looked like it wouldn't fit properly.
I didn't realise until I came to install it that the black plastic trim that screws onto the original HDD simply pushes onto the SSD and what would be the screw holes on the trim just clip over two small lugs on the SSD.
A simple push fit in fact...no screws...no-one said that!
It seemed a little tight pushing the SSD into the bay on one side but it fitted securely.
I am currently in the process of using the genuine IBM/Lenovo Product Recovery CD's to do a fresh install onto the SSD.
Fingers crossed...

Guys,
I've just installed today the 41W0736 into my X40.
It's working, but in the device manager shows it in Ultra DMA 3 mode only (44MB/s max).
Is it normal?
If so, why so limited???
I don't understand...
plz help

Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
Does this drive support TRIM function in Windows 7? Or do you have to use a third party utility to do the clearing? Thanks, about ready to purchase on of these or the KingSpec drive.

I think none of the PATA 1.8 inch SSDs made today support TRIM. So yes, you will need to clean dirt free space yourself.

How often do you clean the free space? (Of course this depends on your usage of the computer)
I am using my laptop as a secondary computer, mostly just surfing and downloading a few files (like pdf, doc etc.) and what else I need on this laptop.
Will once a month be sufficient? I guess it shouldn't be done 2 times a week, or am I wrong? They shouldn't slow down that quickly....?

Okay, sounds like it is not a problem. I ordered a Lenovo SSD from eBay and will post back if I have any questions to ask you experts. Thanks for the reply. Have a good day.
Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
Couple of questions... Did you apply any optimizations to your system specifically for the SSD? How large is your SSD and how much free space is there now? Are you running Windows? XP? Vista? 7?shighfield wrote:I use my laptop with kingspec SSD for work 10+ hours a day, and have not noticed any slow downs yet, been around 2 months with the SSD now.

Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
Per the linked post from bananaman, yes, this lenovo SSD does support TRIM. I have just verified that also, by running this command from an admin cmd prompt:sjthinkpader wrote:I think none of the PATA 1.8 inch SSDs made today support TRIM. So yes, you will need to clean dirt free space yourself.
fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify
a result of 0 indicates that TRIM is enabled.
I also see the drive running @ UDMA-3, and have performance just like other folks with this drive (factory fresh drive, running windows 7 in an x41t, 1.6ghz, 512mb ram):
--------------------------------------------------
CrystalDiskMark 2.2 (C) 2007-2008 hiyohiyo
Crystal Dew World : http://crystalmark.info/
--------------------------------------------------
Sequential Read : 40.627 MB/s
Sequential Write : 29.343 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 40.499 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 21.085 MB/s
Random Read 4KB : 12.098 MB/s
Random Write 4KB : 1.693 MB/s
Test Size : 100 MB
Date : 2009/11/23 16:31:21
I'm happy with it; though it does seem that the read speeds are capped by the ATA interface; perhaps I'll play with trying to force modes higher than UDMA-3 if I feel the need for more speed..

Currently running XP, and did the standard things to it for the SSD. Somewhere in the large thread there is a post to a program that does them for you. 32GB SSD and I have around 18GB free. It is a work box, but I have watched a lot of youtube videos as well. Even kill time playing on pogo with my wife.Couple of questions...
