Hello. I bought transcend cf 32gb 400x and this cf-ide adapter http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWNX:IT.

I create my c:\ disc image with acronis true image home. Then i put it into new cf. Everything working?, but speed is very slow! Slow then 4200 hdd. ultra dma mode 5 enabled! I dont know why :( .. Please help.

i try use eraser but i cant delete default erase profiles or put my profile to up. Also program dont ask what method use! version 5.8.7

!!----------------------------------------------------------------------------------!!!
Update. I can run eraser with my profile, but it give me error. I think problem with compact flah card or PA-CF18H. Maybe this transcend card and adapter incompatible (new 400x cf low power? i dont know).. How you think? I cant test cf card or adapter.. Im very very sad(

Add the "1111" pattern to the list of patterns in Eraser. Select this new pattern by hlighlighting it, then run it.

Since the card is new, the Eraser program may not gain much since most space on the card is still "clean" (11111...).

400x is the read speed, write speed of this Transcend card may be much slower. The Kingston 266x is only a little faster than Ridata 233x in read speed but it is quite a bit faster in write.

to sjthinkpader. thank you for your answer.
Cf 400x transcend write speed 60 MB\sec..
http://www.transcendusa.com/Products/Mo ... 1&Func2No=
in my case speed is very very slow (much slower then 4200 hitachi). Windows even stop responding. I also trying windows xp. no luck with xp. I trying change jumpers on adapter, but also no luck.. Windows experience rating freeze when it test hard drive.
Big Thank!

Not quite sure how they test it. No CF card reached 90MB read in testing with CrystalDiskMark in any case. Transcend has this disclaimer:
"* Note: Based on internal Transcend testing. Actual transfer speed may vary due to host hardware, software and usage. The performance is from Test Metrix which is the perfessional tester for memory card."

You can try running Eraser to see if it helps. Otherwise try to use Kingston 266x or the RiDATA 233x. Someone else tested the Kingston 266x but I deemed RiDATA 233x to be acceptable.

Hello again). I'm had 2 days hard experiment's with this cf :D I'm formated it to ntfs (64k cluster) and install win7 on it. It give some speed, but it not enought for me. Windows not much responsive with this transcend cf. Finally I run crystalmark (on WinXP SP3 Fat32 (32K cluster)) and i see that write speed 1.5 MB\sec (512K)!. Sequential write speed near 30 MB\sec ( i dont remember now)
Now I'm decide sell this cf and buy Samsung 120GB 5400 RPM HS122JC :D. I dont want more experiment's with CF.
Sorry for my english ( I'm learning it now)

Such low transfer speed is similar to the PCMCIA speeds.

Are you sure your CF/IDE adapter is good quality and connected correctly?

Hello matt!

Here are my benchmarks with the PACF18H Adapter. Os - Windows Xp SP3 FAT32 (32K cluster). I try change jumpers on adapter (1.8 or 2.5). No changes. Without jumper it dont work.

I dont know about this adapters quality.. But i read here and on thinkwiki that adapter is good and peoples use it. I dont know what to do. Try another adapter (addonics) or not. That adapters not selling in my city and i need buy it on ebay or from addonics web site. I need wait month till it comes to me:-) my x40 from ebay i was waiting 3 month:-) because russian post problems.

P.S. I forgot to tell about one thing.. Windows 7 give me timeout error when it test CF. (windows rating)

For small size 4K random write, even the RiDATA 233x can reach 0.03MB/Sec, almost double this Transcend card. Another example of fast read and slow write speed. I found this problem with several brands of CF cards. The RiDATA 233x remained the value champion with reasonable performance.

I'm new to this, so would someone kindly tell me whether following parts are compatible with X40?

CF-IDE Adapter for 1.8'' drive: http://cgi.ebay.com/CF-1-8-44-IDE-IBM-X ... 2587wt_913

or

CF-IDE Adapter for 2.5" drive:- http://cgi.ebay.com/CF-1-8-44-IDE-IBM-X ... 2587wt_913

Which one is compatible? 1.8'' or 2.5''? and would this CF card work? http://cgi.ebay.com/8GB-8G-CF-Compact-F ... 3ca7e66bf5

Thank you, I'd really appreciate the help.

1.8" is the one... I don't know if that card will work fast enough, I'm not the expert in CF cards but I recall reading posts above stating that 133x cards will be kind of slow...

Thanks, that helps a lot. Mind if I ask what it takes to put a 80GB ZIF HDD in X40?

Both CF adapters will work. I suggest to use 233x or faster CF cards such as RiDATA.

Here is a IDE-ZIF adapter:

First you'll need an adapter like this (or similar). Then you will need to:

1- Remove the old hard disk drive
1a Remove the keyboard
1b Remove the upper case
2- Insert your new ZIF hard-drive
2a Re-install the upper case
2b Re-install the keyboard

1a & 1b are my personal recommendation. I've tried once installing my zif drive without those steps and it did not get attached properly:

...but maybe it was just me :?

All in all the procedure is fairly easy. Be sure to download the X40 HMM manuals from the lenovo site. Also check this site to see how to attach the zif cable properly: click me

Hope this helps...

Cheers

Hi,

I've been reading quite a lot here, but couldn't find anything about a ide-to-sd adapter to use as an alternative. like this one : http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/IDE-ATA-to-SD-S ... 519265d3fb
Anyone tried it, or is there a reason why we shouldn't try ?
SD-cards are a lot cheaper over here (compared to CF-cards).

Have fun,
Chero.

Hey, when moving from the old Hitachi HDD to an SSD (albeit IDE) and running WinXP, are any new drivers required? Normally I would think SATA.... but I'm not sure about a IDE SSD like Kingspec. Can I simply do a backup and restore to the new drive?

No additional drivers are needed.

Insert SSD in the drive slot then clone the old drive from a USB/PATA adapter.

As for SSD alternatives, only a few PATA choices are commercially available. Here are some data I collected (March 2nd post):
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 1&start=60
In addition to these, Runcor, Super Talent are also available.

1) Yes, it will, see Mar. 2nd post in this thread:

2) This one or similar:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0458532743

3) See thread in item 1.

This is an older product introduced in 2007 so availability is not good.

check this out...1.8" super talent ssd 8 gb... from ebay for $30. I bought it already and loaded on my x40. I used one of those zif connector that came with caddy. its the one you can drop any zif 1.8 drive exactly

like this one of these

http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-X40-X41-X41t-HD ... 19b6756ef2

but i only used the ribbon wit the ide connection on the end and I did not use the caddy it self as the super talent did not fit in it. i guess u can use any zif to ide converter.

heres the super talent off ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWNX:IT

I had alot of trouble in the past with my x40 and wasted alot of money on it...i went from a cf 4gb 300x trend, then a 16 gb 1.3" super talent ssd but the zif connector broke on it and I never got it back up to work and then I got a patriot 16gb 266x cf but that one was too slow... loll wat a waste of money but this one does a good job. i got ubuntu right now just to test the drive. I will put winxp and try crystal marks later.

Ya it is small as of storage. But I just wanted to get something on the x40 that made the unit work! The other hdd I was using kept running in udma2 and I couldnt get around it. But I mainly use this laptop for internet browsing and it serves it purpose. I can use the 16gb patriot to do some storage on a external setup. Hey you guys know that 16gb super talent I have ...can I still use it someway without the zif connectors lid? (the little black thing)

Greetings.

So I've spent more hours researching my laptop upgrade than any human being should, and every time I think I've got a fair handle on my options, somehow or another a wrench gets thrown into the works. So here I am, reduced to asking advice... please have pity.

(Summary of my project follows. Very skippable - my questions begin near the end, at bolded text.)

I have a Thinkpad a22m 2628-TTU, 30GB 4200prm Hitachi HDD, 256mb pc100 ram (upgradable to 512, which I will do), 4mb ATI Rage Mobility M, dual booting Win 2k Pro and Xubuntu. I have had this laptop for nearly a decade; it was my first computer, and has outlived three laptops in the interim (albeit two were well used handdowns).

I want to hobby-ify this thing. I'm going in understanding that I could buy a reasonable new laptop for what it would take to max out what I can do to this thing, but that's not the point - I have the money to spend.

My main goals are these: a.) to mod this thing as much as possible, b.) have every modification be fully internal - nothing sticking out, not even a cardbus wireless adapter, and c.) leave my options open. That is, while I'm ok with spending some dough, I do not want to start down one modification path that has to get abandoned later, leaving me with expensive but useless parts. This is important due to the very limited expansion capacity of this TP.

The setup:

I have four realistic interfaces for data storage on this system (built in USB 1.1 port doesn't count):
- HDD bay.
- Ultrabay 2000
- 2 Cardbus slots

I want to keep an optical solution in this system (in fact I plan to throw a DVD burner in there), so the Ultrabay is out. I also want to keep both of my cardbus slots free, as some other modifications I'm planning rely on having both open (namely, I want to use one for this fella, or maybe him, and the other for an XJack ethernet adapter, as I'm planning on replacing the internal mini-pci ethernet card with a wireless - or possibly wireless + modem - part (will have to add antennas to the LCD).

So the objective: best possible upgrade from the 30GB 4200rpm drive, with the above constraints in mind.

I.

My original plan was just to pick up a WD3200BEVE and call it a day on this part of the upgrade. I started thinking otherwise for two reasons:
1.) I have a terabyte of storage on my desktop that I will not fill anytime soon - will I actually ever make use of that 320GB, or is it wasted money?
2.) This course actually does cripple me for future upgrades: If I ever decided to try to put Windows 7 on this thing, I would need something like the Delkin PCMCIA -> CF option to use as readyboost, and that Delkin part has officially VANISHED from the face of this earth (I spent the entire day today neck deep in bins at every thrift store and goodwill in my city, after exhausting all of the tech stores).

II.

My next plan was to pick up a PATA SSD. Seems like a great idea. However, while I'm willing to put money into this, $300 for the 32GB SLC's gives me pause. Anything less, and I'm either a.) severely crippling my overall storage capacity, or b.) becoming reliant on something like the Delkin adapter option again.

III.

The IDE -> Compact Flash option.

This appeals to me for a few reasons:
a.) The dual adapter from Adonics allows me to use something like a good SLC CF card for my OS, and a larger, cheaper MLC CF card as data storage, for considerably less $/GB than the SLC SSDs.

--------------------------

So now my questions:

1.) With only 512mb of ram, I will absolutely need to keep swap/paging active, especially if I ever want to try and push the envelope and put Win 7 on here. Realistically, how badly is this going to effect the performance / lifespan of my boot disk? a.) Does this officially remove MLC from the equation completely? b.) Will even an SLC card be adversely affected to the point where it is no longer a viable option?

2.) I was tentatively looking at the Transcend 8 or 16GB 300x SLC CF cards as the boot card, and the Transcend 16 or 32GB 400x MLC cards as the data card. I've read that the old Transcend parts were absolute trash, but the newer ones perform much better. In your other thread, the benchmarks for the 400x look very good, and likely an enormous improvement over my little 30GB. But towards the end of this thread, some folk are posting some very underwhelming benchmarks for the Transcend parts again.

So a.) What's the real deal with the Transcend parts here? Are they a viable option, and if not, what would be best?
b.) Would there be a significant performance hit going from the 400x MLC to the 300x SLC? A gain?
c.) Is even the best CF option going to be uncompetitive with a conventional SLC SSD?

3.) I had a #3, but I cannot now recall it. I will ask later if I remember!

Any guidance is very much appreciated.

Your option three would be a 2.5 inch PATA SSD such as the Transcend TS32GSSD25-M. It is still available from legit channels such as Newegg.com. Grab one before they are completely gone.

So you do think, then, that an MLC would be viable for me, even with paging / swap enabled? I've had this computer for a decade, and my goal is to still be using it another decade from now (not exclusively, of course!). Having a dead boot device in a year (when finding compatible parts will be even harder) is no good.

The thing is, even acknowledging that the CF option will perform worse than the conventional SSD option, I may want to go ahead and do it anyway, as the dual interface of the IDE -> CF adapter makes doing the other things I want to do to this computer much easier.

So the questions in part two remain.

I can always buy a 4GB SLC CF, and the Addonics adapter for about $50 total (I worked for another tech reseller) and give it a test run before committing myself to anything more.

EDIT: Forgot to thank you for a quick response, and fielding my questions in the first place!

SSD generally have larger write buffer than CF. The issue is that they will get slower and slower (CF and SSD both) without TRIM function. Try the Eraser software I mention earlier in this thread.

Ok, figured out where my main confusion is.

I misread your benchmarks in the other thread and interpreted the Transcend benchmarks as being for the CF, not the SSD.

Oh well, there goes another grand plan down the toilet.

... But that's okay, because I've just had a brainstorm - an idea so off the wall it can't possibly not fail to work maybe.

Going to keep my mouth shut until I get some research done, to avoid making a fool out of myself ;)
