Windows Forgetting ReadyBoost After Resuming from Standby

#1 Post by loyukfai » Sun Jul 11, 2010 9:19 pm

It seems to happen randomly and I've yet to figure out what's the problem, but my Windows installation sometimes seems to "forget" the ReadyBoost setting (a SD card in a built-in slot on a ThinkPad) after resuming from standby.

64-bit Windows with 8GB SD on exFat.

Any idea...?

Cheers.

Are you saying that the Thinkpad sees the SD card after resume, but just as a normal SD card, and not set up for readyboost?

Exactly.

I've since uninstalled the "SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller" and re-installed it in Device Manager, and the action has, so far, corrected the symptom.

Do you have a better idea why the system is acting like this...?

Cheers.

No good... I'm still getting this from time to time, and have yet to figure out why...

Apparently formatting the disk in NTFS helps...

Cheers.

Edit: Helps a bit, but still occurs.

Are you finding ReadyBoost to actually help?

Not sure, placebo effect, maybe. But since there're an unused SD slot and an unused SDHC card, I say why not?

At least it's really running according to the Performance Monitor.

But I would venture to say, as long as you have >2GB of RAM, in most cases the difference is probably minimal. The most noticeable improvement is likely "on system responsiveness following heavy paging, where reactivating an application via Restore was up to eight times faster." (Source: http://www.roylongbottom.org.uk/readyboost.htm)

Anyway, I've given it up (again) because of its not working reliably - It still gives up occasionally after waking up from standby.

Although I suspect that it has more to do with the SD slot of the notorious Ricoh controller instead of ReadyBoost itself. I could test with a USB memory stick but, even if it works that way I wouldn't be leaving one connected to my box all the time.

Cheers.

Edit: Okay, I'm giving it another go again. This time I've changed the PCI power saving in Power Manager from maximum to moderate and, there's something changed - The SD slot remains usable after some sleep and wake-up attempts, but now it loses the ReadyBoost cache. That's, the file is still there but the system doesn't recognize it.

It used to stick Disk Management, that's, if I open diskmgmt.msc when the problem occurs, the SD slot's light will be stuck, and Disk Management in loading disk and partition information.

Was formatted under NTFS, now trying exFAT and see if there's any difference.

BTW, I have a theory, that the "forgetting" problem is something related to standby and wake-up attempts while running on battery.

It may also has connections to the driver, cause there are reports that the Ricoh controller has problems under some scenarios under Linux as well, but I couldn't find any newer Windows driver for it.

Edit2: Changing the PCI power saving mode seems to be the key.
